Socomec Group (Socomec) is a global leader in electrical equipment engineering and manufacturing, specialized in low voltage energy performance.
Socomec North America (NAM) is Socomec’s organization overseeing all operations in North America.

About This Role

We are looking for a Transformer/Magnetics Design Engineer to design, develop, validate, and industrialize low-voltage dry-type transformer designs up to multi-megawatt ratings, advancing efficiency, performance, manufacturability, and market competitiveness. The work will use advanced multi-physics simulation together with in-house design tools and established engineering processes.
This multifunctional role combines magnetics product development with hands-on manufacturing engineering. The engineer will take ownership of designs from initial simulation and calculations through prototyping, testing, production implementation, and ongoing follow-up. This is not a design hand-off role; the engineer remains closely involved throughout the full product lifecycle.

Key responsibilities include identifying and mitigating losses, optimizing thermal performance, collaborating on design for manufacturability, developing standardized materials and design strategies, supporting production and test troubleshooting, improving product quality, and identifying responsible opportunities to reduce material usage and overall product cost.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Develop transformer models in a multi-physics simulation environment to identify and quantify loss mechanisms, including copper, eddy-current, stray-flux, proximity-effect, skin-effect, circulating-current, and fringing losses.
  • Test and verify the fidelity of the transformer models against real-world testing
  • Apply simulation and modelling results to advance dry-type transformer designs with lower losses, improved performance, and robust manufacturability.
  • Perform and verify magnetic, electrical, thermal, mechanical, insulation, acoustic, and short-circuit analyses
  • Evaluate harmonic and nonlinear loading, including its effects on losses, heating, noise, derating, and practical mitigation measures.
  • Select and apply core, conductor, insulation, and structural materials based on their relevant magnetic, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and manufacturing characteristics
  • Design and develop transformers using amorphous-steel wound cores, balancing loss reduction against audible-noise, mechanical, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Translate design intent into repeatable manufacturing processes, tooling, tolerances, drawings, bills of material, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Plan, witness, and interpret prototype, routine, design, and investigative tests; correlate calculated and measured performance.
  • Participate in resolving design, production, quality, and test issues through root-cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Support product compliance and testing to applicable UL, CSA, IEEE, NEMA, customer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Actively collaborate with Engineering peers, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations on standardization, continuous improvement, and controlled design changes.
  • Execute assigned R&D and production-support projects, coordinating technical activities and deliverables within project-management requirements.

Essential Qualifications, Experience, And Skills

•    Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electromechanical Engineering. Master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred; P.Eng. designation, or eligibility for registration, is an asset
•    Five or more years of directly relevant transformer design and/or manufacturing-engineering experience, preferably with low-voltage dry-type transformers at ratings up to and including multi-megawatt levels. Experience with medium-voltage dry-type transformers is an asset.
•    Demonstrated experience taking transformer designs from concept through prototype development, testing, manufacturing release, and production follow-up.
•    Demonstrated innovation in transformer design, particularly in efficiency, loss reduction, thermal performance, manufacturability, or material optimization.
•    Experience with advanced simulation and modelling tools, such as COMSOL, MATLAB, PSIM, or equivalent tools.
•    Practical experience using transformer test instrumentation, including power meters, micro-ohmmeters, dielectric-withstand (hi-pot) test equipment, sound-level meters, and other related instruments.
•    Working knowledge of applicable UL, CSA, IEEE, NEMA standards and regulatory requirements.
•    Deep applied knowledge of transformer magnetic-circuit design, including flux density, saturation, excitation current, core loss, leakage reactance, impedance, regulation, and stray-loss mechanisms.
•    Detailed understanding of loss mechanisms and mitigation, including eddy currents, stray flux, proximity and skin effects, circulating currents in parallel conductors, foil-winding fringing effects, and structural heating.
•    Knowledge of core, conductor, lamination, insulation, and structural materials, including their magnetic, electrical, thermal, mechanical, processing, and ageing characteristics.

•    Familiarity with harmonic and nonlinear loading effects, including effects on losses, temperature rise, vibration and audible noise, derating, and practical design mitigation.
•    Practical knowledge of dry-type transformer construction, insulation coordination, thermal design and cooling, clamping systems, leads, terminals, and short-circuit withstand.
•    Knowledge of design-for-manufacture, transformer testing, validation, troubleshooting, and correlation of calculated, simulated, and measured performance.
•    Proficiency with transformer design, analysis, CAD, and data tools; electromagnetic and thermal FEA capability is an asset.

Compensation range: $110,000 – $130,000 CAD
