Senior Java Developer

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Software Developer to translate technical system specifications into working, tested applications. The role involves application design and development, coding, testing, troubleshooting, implementation, conversion, migration, and ongoing technical support.

The successful candidate will bring strong Java development experience, Oracle or SQL database expertise, REST API development skills, knowledge of microservices, and experience with Azure DevOps.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate technical system specifications into working, tested applications.
  
• Develop detailed programming specifications.
  
• Write and/or generate code.
  
• Compile data-driven programs, maintain applications, and conduct unit testing.
  
• Resolve and troubleshoot technical problems arising during the use and operation of software packages.
  
• Provide technical assistance during implementations, conversions, and migrations.
  

General Skills

• Experience in programming, analysis, and specialized software package support.
  
• Ability to collaborate with IT professionals throughout the Software Development Life Cycle.
  
• Experience with structured methodologies for application development, design, implementation, and maintenance.
  
• Experience designing, coding, testing, debugging, and documenting applications.
  
• Experience using object-oriented and/or third-generation language development tools.
  
• Experience with one or more programming languages.
  
• Experience with application design, current design patterns, deployment, and troubleshooting.
  
• Experience with relational and hierarchical database technologies.
  
• Experience using information retrieval packages and query languages.
  
• Experience with one or more communication protocols.
  
• Experience eliciting and documenting information from diverse business stakeholders and subject matter experts.

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge and experience developing Internet-ready applications.
  
• Knowledge and experience with Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodologies.
  
• Knowledge and understanding of Information Management principles, concepts, policies, and practices.
  
• Experience with middleware and gateways.
  
• Experience reviewing, analyzing, and modifying product installation scripts, including encoding, testing, and debugging.
  
• Ability to provide post-implementation support and resolve technical issues.
  
• Experience conducting design walkthrough sessions with project teams.
  
• Knowledge and understanding of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and related regulations and standards.
  
• Ability to provide user and system documentation as required.
  

Additional Oracle Development Skills

• Experience conducting impact assessments on Oracle E-Business application customizations and extensions.
  
• Strong conversion experience with Accounts Receivable and Collections modules.
  
• Strong programming skills with Oracle Database, PL/SQL, SQL, XML, Unix shell scripting, and Oracle Data Integrator.
  
• Business knowledge of General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Collections, Accounts Payable, and Inventory modules within Oracle E-Business.
  
• Strong knowledge of Oracle E-Business table structures related to GL, AR, Collections, AP, INV, and FND.
  
• Strong knowledge of SQL tuning and partitioned tables.
  
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of data warehousing, ETL methodologies, and OBIEE.
  
• Java and Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) experience is considered a strong asset.
  
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and leadership capabilities to oversee technical quality assurance.
  

Core Skills and Experience - 40%

• 5+ years of experience as a designer and developer of large-scale, multi-client web applications.
  
• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience with Oracle or SQL databases.
  
• 2+ years of hands-on experience with REST APIs and RESTful Web Services.
  
• Knowledge and experience with microservice architecture and the ability to apply core architectural principles to improve product extensibility and maintainability.
  
• Knowledge and experience developing Internet-ready applications.
  
• Knowledge and experience with RAD methodologies.
  
• Experience using Azure DevOps.
  

Technical Skills and Experience - 35%

• Knowledge of security gateways and protocols, including JWT, OAuth 2.0, and SSL certificates.
  
• Solid understanding of Agile methodologies.
  
• Object-oriented coding practices, including design patterns, refactoring, and clean code.
  
• Experience with relational and hierarchical database technologies.
  
• Experience with query languages and information retrieval packages.
  
• Experience with one or more communication protocols.
  

Soft Skills - 20%

• Strong written and verbal communication.
  
• Ability to develop and present new ideas and conceptualize new approaches and solutions.
  
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively within teams.

Public Sector Experience - 5%

• Experience with Ontario Public Service development standards and processes.
  

Must-Have Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a designer and developer of large-scale, multi-client web applications.
  
• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience with Oracle or SQL databases.
  
• 2+ years of hands-on experience with REST APIs and RESTful Web Services.
  
• Experience using Azure DevOps.
  

Work Arrangement

• 5 days onsite.
