Wage Range: $34.87 - $43.59 per hour.
Hours: 37.5 Hours per Week
Status: Permanent Full-Time

Job Summary

The Pulmonary Function Charge Technologist provides operational and clinical leadership within the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. This role is responsible for supervising technologist staff, coordinating daily operations, ensuring adherence to professional and regulatory standards, and supporting quality assurance initiatives. The Charge Technologist collaborates closely with the Manager, Medical Director, Biomedical Engineering, and multidisciplinary teams while continuing to perform advanced pulmonary diagnostic testing.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Operations

  • Provide day‑to‑day supervision, direction, and support to Pulmonary Function Technologists
  • Coordinate staffing, scheduling, and workflow to ensure efficient laboratory operations
  • Conduct performance feedback and contribute to annual staff performance reviews
  • Support staff education, competency development, and adherence to professional standards

Clinical Practice

  • Perform pulmonary function diagnostic testing and reporting in compliance with:
    • American Thoracic Society (ATS)
    • Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS)
    • European Respiratory Society (ERS)
  • Assess test quality, troubleshoot discrepancies, and ensure physiological accuracy of results
  • Utilize EPIC and laboratory systems for documentation and reporting

Quality Assurance & Standards

  • Lead quality assurance activities, audits, and quality control processes
  • Establish and maintain audit protocols and ensure staff compliance with QA requirements
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory

Equipment & Technology

  • Participate in equipment planning, implementation, and lifecycle management
  • Collaborate with Biomedical Engineering and vendors to troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new technology and diagnostic methodologies

Collaboration & Communication

  • Act as a clinical resource for physicians, allied health professionals, and staff
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including vendors and other Pulmonary Function labs
  • Support the Medical Director in updates to testing protocols and clinical guidelines

Qualifications

  • Completion of a College Diploma (Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Technology) or
  • University Degree  Human Sciences, or a related health discipline 
  • Current membership and certification with the Canadian Association of Cardio‑Pulmonary Technologists (CACPT)
  • Minimum 5–7 years of related Pulmonary Function laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in staff leadership, supervision, or charge responsibilities
  • Advanced knowledge of pulmonary diagnostics and laboratory quality standards
  • Expert understanding of pulmonary function testing theory and application
  • Strong knowledge of ATS, CTS, and ERS standards
  • Proven ability to interpret complex test data and resolve clinical or technical issues
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Proficiency with computer systems and electronic health records (EPIC preferred)
