The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, and enforcement activities. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

What We Do
The Communications, International and Stakeholder Affairs (CISA) Division plays an integral role in advancing the OSC’s position domestically and globally as a trusted and influential voice on capital markets. The division works to uphold public confidence in the OSC’s work and Ontario’s capital markets by facilitating strong relationships with stakeholders and regulatory partners, alignment with government priorities and international standards, and the effective communication of OSC priorities, policies, and actions.
The CISA team engages internal, external, domestic, and international stakeholders through direct outreach, policy forums, executive thought leadership, corporate reporting materials, website and enterprise social media channels.
CISA supports the Commission’s accountability to the Government of Ontario and the Minister of Finance, advises on key developments in other jurisdictions, promotes regulatory cooperation and information-sharing to improve cross-border supervision, and supports the development of global regulatory standards.
The Opportunity
The Communications, International and Stakeholder Affairs Summer Student will work primarily with the Corporate Communications team on developing and implementing targeted and strategic enterprise-wide communications. This team is responsible for content development, graphic design, stakeholder newsletters, corporate reports, OSC websites, enterprise social media, and corporate events.
This opportunity is ideal for someone who is interested in a career in financial communications and would like to gain exposure to a variety of disciplines within corporate communications.
This position provides communications support to senior staff on OSC corporate events, enterprise social media, and OSC initiatives requiring integrated communications strategies.
Specific tasks may comprise:
Corporate Communications
- Assist with content development for stakeholder newsletter
- Copy-edit external reports published by the OSC
- Support Communications Coordinator in distribution of external announcements and publications
- Provide administrative support on CRM tool implementation and stakeholder management
- Function as Brand ambassador and support oversight of our brand guidelines
Social Media
- Contribute to social media content calendar for OSC’s corporate X and LinkedIn accounts
- Participate in content planning sessions for thought leadership posts for promoting on OSC corporate accounts
- Assist with graphic design to support social media content development
Website
- Assist in review and update of core OSC website (osc.ca) content
Events
- Support events planner with logistical and administrative support related to large scale events as needed
- Research potential events and speaking engagements for OSC staff
Domestic, International and Public Affairs
- Assist with logging media inquiries in database.
- Perform ad-hoc research to assist senior staff with analysis of media coverage as well as domestic developments with implications for the OSC.
- Support planning and preparation for meetings with Domestic stakeholders.
- Perform ad-hoc research on international developments with implications for the OSC.
What do you need to be successful in this role?
- In process of completing an undergraduate degree or graduate certificate in Public Relations or communications.
- An interest in financial communications and the capital markets.
- Strong writing skills with a commitment to high quality, technically accurate and concise output.
- Knowledge of Canadian Press Style with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Internally motivated, and able to work proficiently, both independently and in a team environment.
- Strong work ethic and organizational skills to meet aggressive deadlines.
- Solid professionalism and discretion in handling confidential issues.
- Experience working with customer relationship management and media monitoring platforms an asset.
- Knowledge of financial concepts and the securities industry an asset.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, specialized/proprietary applications, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
