How We Use AI in Our Hiring Process
Blue J is the leading generative AI solution for tax professionals and one of Canada's fastest-growing AI companies. Headquartered in Toronto, we're a high-growth B2B SaaS company building industry-leading tax research software that helps accountants find accurate answers to complex tax questions with greater speed and confidence.
Backed by a $122M USD Series D funding round, we're scaling rapidly across North America and the UK while continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible with AI. By combining advanced technology with deep tax expertise, we empower tax professionals to work more efficiently, make better decisions, and deliver greater value to their clients
This hybrid role requires candidates to live within driving distance of Toronto and attend our downtown office periodically as needed. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.
Blue J has scaled from a 50-person startup to a team of 150+ by hiring exceptional people, empowering decision-making, and building a culture of trust, ownership, and collaboration. As we double our headcount over the next 18 months, we need to evolve the systems, processes, and operating principles that enable the business to scale effectively.
We're looking for a Vice President, Business Operations & Transformation to help lead that evolution. Reporting to the CFO and serving as a member of Blue J's Leadership Team, you'll own the design and continuous improvement of the company's operating system - the structures, processes, systems, technologies, and operating rhythms that enable the business to execute effectively as we grow.
Working across every function, you'll identify opportunities to optimize how work gets done, leverage AI and automation, and build scalable operating models that allow our people to focus on high-value work. Success in this role requires the ability to think strategically, see the organization as an interconnected system, and drive meaningful operational change while preserving the culture that has made Blue J successful. Equal parts strategist, operator, systems architect, and change leader, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping how Blue J scales.
Designing & Optimizing Blue J's Operating System
- Own the evolution of Blue J's operating system, strengthening how the company plans, decides, communicates, and executes as we scale.
- Design, implement, and optimize operating models, governance structures, communication frameworks, and execution cadences.
- Build systems that enable scalability through clarity, consistency, and accountability rather than institutional knowledge or informal relationships.
- Identify and resolve organizational friction points, inefficiencies, and gaps before they become significant business challenges.
- Establish scalable approaches to decision-making, planning, communication, and execution while balancing structure with agility.
- Preserve Blue J's culture, trust, and autonomy while introducing the discipline required for the next stage of growth.
AI-Powered Business Transformation
- Own Blue J's internal AI strategy and help define how AI transforms the way we operate.
- Identify opportunities to redesign workflows, automate repetitive work, improve decision-making, and create leverage across the business.
- Partner with leaders to reimagine how work gets done
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that position Blue J at the forefront of operational innovation.
- Establish governance, standards, and best practices for AI adoption.
- Drive implementation of AI-enabled processes and build a roadmap that embeds AI into how Blue J operates.
Business Systems, Technology & Knowledge Management
- Own Blue J's internal systems strategy, technology ecosystem, and information architecture.
- Ensure business systems evolve intentionally to support organizational growth.
- Lead procurement governance and optimize the technology stack.
- Partner with IT, Security, and GRC to ensure secure, appropriate access to systems and information.
- Establish and own company-wide knowledge management tooling, standards, governance, documentation practices, and accountability.
Cross-Functional Leadership & Strategic Initiatives
- Lead high-impact initiatives that span multiple functions and do not naturally belong within a single department.
- Identify emerging organizational risks, inefficiencies, and opportunities.
- Drive execution on critical company priorities requiring coordination across multiple stakeholders.
- Take ownership of important challenges that do not have an obvious functional owner.
- Build alignment across teams while maintaining momentum on strategic initiatives.
Leadership Team Effectiveness
- Serve as a member of Blue J's Leadership Team and help shape the future direction of the company.
- Partner with leaders to improve planning, communication, decision-making, and execution.
- Evaluate and evolve operating frameworks, including EOS and future operating models.
- Improve executive-level visibility, accountability, and alignment around company priorities.
- Ensure strategic goals translate into coordinated execution across the organization.
- Build the systems, cadences, and operating rhythms that enable leaders and teams to operate at a consistently high level.
- 10+ years of experience leading business operations, transformation initiatives, strategic projects, chief of staff functions, consulting engagements, or other highly cross-functional leadership efforts, with significant exposure to executive teams.
- Experience in a 300+ person organization, including contributing to the development and continuous improvement of practices, processes, and programs in a growing company.
- Experience in management consulting (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG), strategic transformation, private equity operating teams, and/or high-growth technology companies is a strong asset.
- PMP or similar project management experience is beneficial but not required.
- Proven success designing and implementing operating models, business processes, and organizational systems that improve effectiveness, alignment, and scalability.
- Strong systems-thinking capabilities and a track record of simplifying complexity, solving root-cause problems, and building practical solutions.
- Experience leading company-wide initiatives and driving organizational change across multiple stakeholders and functions.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to redesign workflows and drive business transformation.
- Experience evaluating and optimizing business systems, internal tooling, and knowledge management practices.
- Exceptional executive presence, communication, and influencing skills.
- Strong business judgment and a pragmatic approach to balancing structure, scalability, speed, and agility.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity, creating clarity, and taking ownership of challenges without an obvious solution or owner.
- Alignment with Blue J's values and a passion for building systems that help talented people do their best work.
- A rare opportunity to take on a high-impact leadership role shaping how the business operates as it grows.
- A mission-driven culture where your work directly advances clarity, efficiency, and accessibility in tax research.
- Competitive base salary, stock options, and benefits designed to support you and your family.
- A collaborative, ambitious, and supportive team that values innovation, respect, and fun.
- The excitement of a fast-growing, well-funded company with strong momentum and the resources to back bold initiatives.
