Job Description

Arcadis is seeking an experienced Accessibility Specialist interested in universal design for complex projects from start to finish. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of work experience developing and implementing universal design strategies and detailed knowledge of accessibility regulations, Human Rights codes, Ontario Building Code (OBC), Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act - Design of Public Spaces (AODA-DOPS), Canadian Standards Association/Accessibility Standards Canada standards, Americans with Disabilities Act Design Standards, Accessible Canada Act, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Metrolinx and GO Universal Design Standards and other relevant building codes and standards. Our Global Architecture & Urbanism Division combines the expertise of IBI’s Buildings and Placemaking practice, our Places’ capabilities, and CRTKL’s multi-sector design leadership to offer a diverse range of solutions focusing on human-centric design, sustainability, and technology.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team (architecture, urban design, engineering, interior design, and wayfinding) to support the design and construction of design projects.
  • Serve as a Technical Advisor, offering expert advice and assistance on accessibility matters.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on accessibility requirements for a variety of project including large complete transit system design projects.
  • Review architectural drawings, details, and material samples to ensure compliance with accessibility standards and guidelines.
  • Conduct thorough assessments and evaluations to identify potential accessibility barriers and propose innovative solutions.
  • Stay abreast of evolving accessibility regulations, standards, and best practices to inform design decisions effectively.
  • Present to accessibility advisory committees and collaborate with government and transit agency partners.
  • Review standards from external groups and incorporate them into project designs as necessary.
  • Assisting in the construction administration phase and general review for universal design compliance.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience:

ALL CANDIDATES MUST SUBMIT A PORTFOLIO WITH THEIR CV/RESUME

  • Applicable post-secondary school education or Architectural Technologist Degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing and implementing universal design strategies with a wide range of experience/projects.
  • Detailed knowledge of accessibility regulations, Human Rights codes, Ontario Building Code (OBC), Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act - Design of Public Spaces (AODA-DOPS), Canadian Standards Association/Accessibility Standards Canada standards, Americans with Disabilities Act Design Standards, Accessible Canada Act, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and other relevant building codes and standards.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe InDesign/Illustrator, and Bluebeam/Adobe Acrobat markups.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation (an asset).
  • Analytical thinker and problem solver with strong communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • IAAP Certified Professional in Accessible Built Environments (Level 2 preferred) and Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification are assets.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
