Our teams enjoy a culture focused on prioritizing a flexible work environment that empowers individual growth, well-being, and belonging. We’re a technology company that leads with our humanity—driving our business priorities alongside meaningful social, community, and societal impact.

This role shapes how Ciena brings next‑generation coherent optical transceivers from concept to high‑volume production. The Test Engineering Manager for Coherent Optical Transceivers leads the strategy, architecture, and execution of advanced electrical, optical, system, and environmental test solutions that ensure performance, quality, and manufacturability at scale. The position partners closely with Research and Development (R&D), product management, and manufacturing to enable robust, efficient, and future‑ready test and calibration capabilities across Ciena’s coherent portfolio.
How you will make an impact:
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of test development engineers supporting coherent optical transceiver programs across R&D and manufacturing phases.
  • Define and execute long‑term test and calibration strategies aligned with product, technology, and manufacturing roadmaps.
  • Architect scalable, accurate, and cost‑efficient test stations for high‑volume production of coherent optical products.
  • Own electrical, optical, system‑level, and environmental test strategies for coherent optical communication systems.
  • Drive development and deployment of automated test equipment (ATE) and calibration systems for coherent components and subsystems.
  • Partner early with R&D to influence design for testability, calibration approaches, and quality metrics.
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturing partners to transition new coherent transceiver and modem products into mass production.
The must haves:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in optical, electrical, or hardware engineering, including leadership responsibilities in highly technical environments.
  • Proven experience managing competing test development and production priorities across multiple programs or teams.
  • Strong understanding of coherent optical communication systems, including modulation formats, digital signal processing, and impairment analysis.
  • Hands‑on experience with optical and electrical laboratory measurement equipment and script‑based automation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute design verification plans and regression testing for complex hardware systems.
  • Strong communication and cross‑functional collaboration skills across hardware, firmware, software, and manufacturing teams.
Nice to haves:
  • Experience with high‑speed coherent optical transceivers (400G, 800G, and 1.6T) and associated digital signal processing, transimpedance amplifiers, drivers, and photonic components.
  • Background in advanced modulation transceiver design and system‑level test and debug.
  • Proficiency with Python, LabVIEW, or similar test automation frameworks to improve throughput and consistency.
  • Experience driving yield improvement, test time reduction, and cost optimization in high‑volume manufacturing environments.
  • Exposure to machine learning‑based optimization or predictive models applied to test efficiency or manufacturing analytics.
  • Experience supporting hybrid or onsite lab environments with occasional travel to partner or contract manufacturing sites.
