Position Overview

We are hiring an Engineering Manager – Data & Services to lead a team of software engineers responsible for building and operating backend services and APIs that support Autodesk’s enterprise data and platform capabilities. This role is intended for a people-focused engineering leader with a strong foundation in backend software engineering, APIs, and service-oriented architectures, who can effectively manage delivery, execution, and collaboration across product and engineering partners.

As an Engineering Manager, your primary responsibility is to lead and enable the team—through clear direction, strong execution, and continuous coaching—while staying sufficiently hands-on to guide technical decisions, review designs, and support production operations. This role requires comfort operating in ambiguity, balancing short-term delivery with long-term technical and organizational health. Familiarity with data engineering concepts is beneficial, and the manager should be willing to engage in limited hands-on data or backend work when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of backend software engineers, fostering strong engineering culture, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Own people management responsibilities including hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and engagement.

  • Run day-to-day agile execution for the team, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, capacity planning, delivery tracking, and retrospectives.

  • Partner closely with product and program management to translate roadmaps and requirements into clear, prioritized, and executable engineering plans.

  • Be accountable for delivery outcomes, quality, and team health—balancing scope, timelines, and technical tradeoffs.

  • Provide technical leadership for backend services and APIs, guiding architecture, reviewing designs and code, and ensuring sound engineering decisions.

  • Ensure the team builds and operates scalable, reliable backend systems, including microservices, serverless components, and event-driven workflows.

  • Drive strong production ownership practices, including observability, incident response, root-cause analysis, and durable remediation.

  • Manage cross-team dependencies and collaborate with partner teams to deliver aligned outcomes.

  • Align team execution with broader organizational goals, engineering standards, and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on backend systems and APIs.

  • 3+ years of people management experience, managing teams of software engineers.

  • Solid technical background in backend software engineering, including API and service development (e.g., Python or equivalent backend languages).

  • Hands-on experience designing and operating services on AWS or comparable cloud platforms.

  • Good understanding of distributed systems, including asynchronous processing, messaging, and fault tolerance.

  • Experience running agile delivery processes, including sprint planning, capacity management, and backlog prioritization.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with product, program, and cross-functional stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing teams that build platform or shared services consumed by multiple internal teams.

  • Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging/streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, or equivalents).

  • Familiarity with data engineering concepts or platforms (e.g., data pipelines, data warehouses such as Snowflake).

  • Willingness and ability to engage in hands-on technical or data work when needed.

  • Experience operating in large, distributed organizations with complex stakeholder and dependency landscapes.
