Role Overview:

In 2021, the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting issued the Pillar Two framework, which is intended to ensure that large multinational enterprises, such as Manulife, pay a minimum effective tax rate of 15% in each jurisdiction in which they operate. This framework is commonly referred to as the Global Minimum Tax (GMT).

GMT became effective in Canada in 2024 and has been implemented, or is being implemented, in jurisdictions around the world. Manulife’s Global Tax team is now focused on the ongoing execution of GMT compliance, tax reporting and advisory activities across applicable jurisdictions.

The Senior Tax Analyst, Global Taxation will be an integral member of the GMT team, with primary responsibility for preparing data, calculations, filings and reporting. Reporting to the AVP, Global Taxation and supporting the Manager, Global Taxation, the incumbent will work closely with Global Tax colleagues, local tax teams, Finance, IT, and business stakeholders.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Prepare quarterly and annual GMT calculations, including jurisdictional effective tax rate, top-up tax, safe harbour, substance-based income exclusion and related supporting schedules.
  • Gather, validate and reconcile data used in GMT tax provision, compliance filings and management reporting; investigate data gaps and coordinate timely resolution with data owners.
  • Support tax accounting and reporting processes by preparing account reconciliations, journal-entry support and explanations of period-over-period changes.
  • Prepare GMT returns, registrations, notifications and other jurisdictional compliance deliverables, together with complete supporting documentation and audit trails.
  • Maintain entity, filing and legislative trackers and support an effective control environment through documented procedures, evidence retention and timely escalation of issues.
  • Research and document technical matters, monitor OECD guidance and jurisdictional legislation, and summarize the compliance, reporting or advisory implications for review.
  • Coordinate with local tax and controller teams and third-party service providers to obtain inputs, respond to questions and support timely, accurate deliverables.

In addition to core GMT execution, the Senior Tax Analyst will contribute to continuous improvement and broader Global Tax advisory activities, including:

  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, calculation efficiency, controls, documentation and repeatability across the end-to-end GMT lifecycle.
  • Prepare analyses that support GMT advisory, planning and business decisions, including assessment of entity changes, transactions and emerging jurisdictional exposures.
  • Support broader international tax advisory and compliance work, including surplus calculations and related analysis for Manulife’s foreign affiliates.
  • Partner with Global Tax colleagues on other tax reporting, compliance and advisory priorities as capacity and business needs evolve.

Required Qualifications:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA preferred) or equivalent relevant tax and accounting experience.
  • Relevant experience in corporate tax, tax accounting, financial reporting, audit or a related analytical role.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prepare accurate calculations, reconcile data and maintain clear supporting documentation.
  • Curious and resilient, with a demonstrated ability to learn new tax and accounting concepts and apply them to practical deliverables.
  • Results-oriented and well organized, with the ability to meet tight timelines, manage recurring compliance obligations and balance competing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical matters clearly to tax and non-tax stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and jurisdictions and to escalate issues in a timely, solutions-oriented manner.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Canadian or international corporate taxation, tax accounting or insurance is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of Pillar Two/GMT, foreign-affiliate surplus calculations, corporate tax compliance or tax provision processes is an asset.
  • Familiarity with AI-efficiency tools (e.g. Microsoft Copilot) is an asset.

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.
  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.
  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.
