Fixed Term contract - 12 months

Kia ora — ready to design systems that actually matter?

At Heartland, we’re re‑engineering the core of a modern bank. Not patching legacy. Not bolting on AI. Building an intelligent, AI‑enabled platform from the ground up that powers fully digital, end‑to‑end customer journeys at scale.

If you love integration, clean architecture, high‑trust teams, and solving hard problems, this might be your next move. Contribute quickly in an enterprise integration environment and work across multiple systems and delivery streams in this fixed term contract!

The mission

As a Senior Software Engineer (Integration), you’ll sit at the centre of Heartland’s Digital Automation & Transformation programme — connecting platforms, services and squads across origination, servicing and AI‑enabled products.

You’ll:

  • Design and deliver scalable, secure integration solutions
  • Build and expose robust APIs across enterprise systems
  • Shape CI/CD pipelines and automation tooling
  • Partner closely with product, architecture and delivery teams
  • Own technical decisions that impact the entire organisation

This is hands‑on, high‑impact engineering — not ticket‑taking.

Your tech toolkit

You’re comfortable operating in enterprise environments and switching gears as priorities shift. You bring calm, clarity and quality to complex integration landscapes.

You’re solid with:

  • OpenShift, Docker & containerised deployments
  • Messaging queues & brokers
  • Microservices (Spring Boot ideally)
  • IBM API Connect / DataPower
  • Oracle SOA Suite / Oracle Service Bus
  • Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines
  • RESTful API design & integration architecture
  • Working in Agile (Scrum & Kanban) delivery models
  • 12+ years in integration engineering
  •  Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or higher)

Nice to have
Cloud‑native microservices, DevOps/DevSecOps, Kubernetes, Azure AD B2C, distributed systems — bonus points.

How we work

  • Senior‑only engineering model — small teams, high trust, real ownership
  • 4 days in the office — because whiteboards, fast decisions and collaboration matter when the problems are complex
  • AI‑first mindset — led by Andre Sampaio, former COO of PwC’s Global AI Factory
  • Focused on simplifying the tech estate, not growing it

This is where architecture decisions are made by the people writing the code.

Why Heartland?

We’re a NZX/ASX‑listed financial services group with ambitious growth plans across New Zealand and Australia. We build award‑winning products for business owners, farmers and retirees — and we’re digitalising everything we do to deliver faster service and better value to customers.

You’ll find:

  • A genuinely inclusive, values‑led culture

  • Active internal communities (Manawa Whenua, Rainbow Committee, D&I, Green Team)
  • A workplace that welcomes you exactly as you are

We’re a Living Wage Employer, Hearing Accredited, and proud holders of the Rainbow Tick.

Can you see yourself here?

If you want to:

  • Own meaningful architecture
  • Work with senior peers
  • Build platform foundations that future teams and products will run on
  • Be part of AI‑led transformation that’s real — not hype

We’d love to hear from you.
