Your role:

Marketplace, Canada’s award-winning investigative consumer program is looking for a senior researcher to join our team of experienced journalists and innovative storytellers.

If you’re able to conduct in-depth research, chase sources, have an obsession with getting the facts right, and the passion to dig deeper into the biggest consumer stories of our times, then this job is made for you.   

You take initiative and you can also take direction.  You’re a team player who welcomes stepping in and assisting your colleagues with daily tasks without being asked because you see the need.  

There is often a requirement to do field research and you’re up for that challenge. Advice and guidance are available but you can do it with minimal direction.

As a senior researcher, you will work within story teams (alongside a host and a story producer) under the direction of the Executive Producer and Senior Producer. You already see yourself as a great communicator which will be key in your role connecting with people centered in our investigative journalism.
You also have a keen attention to detail so your notes will be thorough and will include everything we need to keep our investigations organized. Your familiarity with the legal system, the corporate world and government bureaucracy will ensure you maneuver around any roadblock that comes your way. 

You have a strong understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and your work will adhere to it. 

Key Tasks:

  • Consistently pitches original ideas for program content in line with the program’s mandate and objectives

  • Ensures the story research is accurate

  • Assists in developing program content including writing, researching and basic interviewing

  • Coordinating the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants

  • Finding experts with diverse backgrounds and opinions, and pre-interviewing them

  • Develops background, introduction, and line of questioning, conducts investigative research, and ensures the briefing of all members of the team. 

  • Maintains contact files.

  • Participates in all aspects of the production; includes conducting hidden camera shoots and willingness to appear on camera for production shoots, as required.

  • Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience, which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program;

  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program

  • Conduct field research, including location scouts; organize logistics for local, national and international travel, for the purpose of production, as required

We are looking for a candidate with the following: 

  • Proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry, with experience in investigative journalism

  • An understanding of consumer journalism, and the tools needed to achieve it.

  • Experience filing FOI requests.

  • Solid journalistic skills and demonstrated understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, particularly those sections dealing with responsible communication, misrepresentation and hidden cameras and microphones.

  • Able to work with experienced producers and hosts to develop and produce high-impact current affairs programming, under tight deadlines.

  • Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities and prioritize and plan.

  • Able to work productively with hosts, producers and all members of the Marketplace team

  • Excellent problem solving skills.

  • Able to communicate both verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.

  • Creativity, and a love of the craft of video journalism.

  • Ability to pitch and recognize stories that fit the unique Marketplace mandate.

  • Must be available for flexible shift work including evenings and weekend duties.

  • This is currently a hybrid role based in Toronto with set in-office days, which is subject to change.
