The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Business Communications, we are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Policy Communications Advisor, Canada. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who is a big picture thinker with deep expertise in policy and advocacy, has a sophisticated understanding of macro and geopolitical environments, and can translate how these dynamics impact our industry and the communities where we operate. This senior-level position requires advanced advocacy capabilities, energy policy acumen, extensive media relationships, and exceptional strategic planning and project management skills.

What you'll do

  • Provide strategic counsel on policy communications to senior leadership and cross-functional teams

  • Lead the development and execution of sophisticated advocacy strategies that advance business priorities and support new energy infrastructure projects

  • Cultivate and leverage high-level political media relationships to shape policy narratives favorable to organizational objectives, including projects

  • Design and implement comprehensive issues management frameworks, including crisis response protocols and audience-specific communications plans

  • Craft nuanced policy narratives that resonate with key stakeholders, balancing technical accuracy with compelling storytelling

  • Serve as a senior advisor for executive speaking engagements and high-profile media opportunities, including developing strategic messaging, scripts, and briefing materials

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with a one-team mindset, aligning communications efforts across the organization to maximize impact and consistency

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of industry trends, policy developments, and geopolitical shifts to provide forward-looking strategic guidance.

  • Mentor and develop junior communications team members.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in communications, public policy, political science, journalism, or related field preferred

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in strategic communications, public affairs, policy advocacy, or related fields

  • Demonstrated expertise in issues and reputation management, crisis communications, and complex project leadership

  • Sophisticated understanding of Canadian political and regulatory systems, policy development processes, and their implications for business

  • Exceptional writing abilities with experience crafting executive-level communications and policy positions

  • Proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with senior media contacts and policy influencers

  • Strategic mindset with the ability to anticipate issues, identify opportunities, and develop proactive approaches

  • Experience advising senior leadership on sensitive policy matters and communications strategies

  • Works effectively with multiple internal stakeholders across geographies with a “one team” approach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the energy sector or related regulated industries

  • Bilingual (English/French)

  • Established network of relationships with political journalists, policy experts, and government officials

  • Background in successfully navigating high-stakes policy debates or regulatory proceedings

  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical and policy concepts for diverse audiences

  • Experience managing communications during significant organizational or industry transitions

  • History of developing innovative approaches to policy advocacy that achieve measurable results

  • Strong presentation skills and comfort representing the organization in high-profile settings.
