Who you are:

The Senior Manager, Software Development is responsible for leading and overseeing multiple teams of developers including Team Leads, engineers and QA professionals in the development of Geotab software platforms by ensuring that the teams deliver high quality features to customers. This position extends the Manager, Software Development role, for individuals with extensive people management experience and responsibility for multiple product areas. The Senior Manager has demonstrated the ability to independently and successfully manage all aspects of people management. 

What you'll do:

The Senior Manager, Software Development will lead two critical areas of our technology: Compliance and Mobile. In this role, you will be directing the development of software systems that streamline driver-safety compliance and enhance the lives of fleet administrators and their drivers out on the road. You will own mission-critical applications that are used by over 450k drivers daily. This will require a keen eye for detail as well as the ability to scale & load test software solutions effectively. The Fleet Compliance team works with a modern tech stack including C#, ASP.NET, Docker, Kubernetes, and Postgres on the backend; as well as TypeScript, React and Redux on the frontend. In addition, you will own the development of Geotab's mobile platform, including the Geotab Drive and MyGeotab mobile apps, and the native Android and iOS capabilities that underpin them.

How you'll make an impact

  • Direct software development projects; develop and implement efficient, clean code with assigned teams that satisfies customer requirements.
  • Provide oversight to multiple teams spanning multiple product areas; direct reports are typically Team Leads or higher-level ICs.
  • Manage teams with regards to project assignments, work arrangements and other Software Development Department expectations.
  • Ensure work is progressing toward a defined schedule, and update stakeholders on project status.
  • Manage, measure and change existing product features using an Agile software development process, e.g., SCRUM, Kanban.
  • Collaborate with other development teams on design and implementation of features spanning multiple products.
  • Lead and participate in development of prototypes, minimum viable products and PoCs.
  • Lead various cross-functional meetings, removing roadblocks for team members as required.
  • Contribute to high level product design and definition.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative culture within their teams.
  • Provide expert project-leadership and guidance to the team as a SME. Oversee the activities and performance of direct reports:
  • Provide direction, coaching and mentorship to direct reports and their teams.
  • Engage in the development of teams by coaching, providing feedback, identifying areas of growth and training opportunities.
  • Collaborate and support employees during the performance management process, meeting KPAs and career development planning.
  • Support Geotab global strategic initiatives.

What you'll bring to the role

  • 12+ years of experience in developing software using object-oriented programming to build scalable applications.
  • 3-5+ years of supervisory experience managing and developing cross-functional teams.
  • 5-8+ years of experience leading technical projects in either an individual contributor or management capacity.
  • High level expertise in people management.  
  • Success with coaching and development of employees.
  • Knowledge of multiple general-purpose programming languages (e.g., C#, Java, Python, Rust).
  • Experience with relational database design, optimization and writing queries (e.g., Postgres, SQL Server, MySQL).
  • Knowledge of multiple front-end languages and libraries (e.g. HTML/CSS, JavaScript, XML, ES6, jQuery) and JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, Node.js, Vue.js) and experience with UI/UX design .
  • Experience with Python, Google Compute Engine and Google BigQuery.
  • Proficiency in Git, or some other distributed source control tool, and are comfortable with resolving merge conflicts and renaming branches, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem-solve to well-judged decisions.
  • Strong project management skills; able to identify needs, develop effective solutions and manage projects through to completion.
  • A strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
  • Technical competence using software programs, including, but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfortable in a flat organization.
