Who We Are

SWTCH is pioneering EV charging solutions for multifamily and commercial properties across North America. Since 2016, our team of entrepreneurs, energy professionals, and technologists has been focused on unlocking the social, economic, and environmental benefits of widespread EV adoption. Today, our solutions are deployed in tens of thousands of locations —many of which are low-to-moderate income housing—helping to make clean mobility accessible for all.

With an expanding footprint across Canada and the U.S., we’re scaling quickly and looking for mission-driven talent to help accelerate our growth.

The Role

At SWTCH, we're accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles by delivering intelligent charging solutions that make EV charging more accessible, reliable, and efficient. Our platform powers thousands of charging stations across North America, helping property owners, businesses, utilities, and drivers transition to a more sustainable future.

We're looking for a QA Automation Engineer who is passionate about software quality and automation to help ensure our products are reliable, scalable, and deliver an exceptional customer experience.

The Opportunity

Today, our automated test coverage is unit tests and some integration testing — we have no systematic automated coverage of end-to-end user flows. That's the gap this role exists to close. You'll design and build our automated E2E testing practice from the ground up, working closely with Product and Engineering to make sure we stop shipping regressions as we scale. You'll have real latitude here: this isn't a role where testing requirements arrive fully formed. Product can tell you what the product needs to do; figuring out how we verify it actually does that reliably is yours to define.

How We Work
  • Decisions live as close to the work as possible — you'll own how testing gets built, not just execute a checklist someone else wrote.
  • We're kind, not nice — we say the hard thing early, in a way that respects the person hearing it. Feedback is specific and timely, not saved for a review cycle.
  • We ship in small increments and treat real usage as the fastest way to learn what's working.
  • We hold strong opinions loosely — bring conviction, stay open to being wrong.
What you'll be doing
  • Guide Product Managers in translating use cases into testable requirements and edge cases — PMs bring the "what," you bring the "how do we know it actually works."
  • Own the definition of test strategy and testing standards, and design our automated E2E / user-flow testing approach from scratch.
  • Develop and execute automated functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end test suites.
  • Implement the automated portions of the testing plans you define.
  • Mentor and train engineers on writing, maintaining, and extending automated tests — part of this role's mandate is building testing capability across the team, not just within QA.
  • Perform manual/exploratory testing where automation isn't yet in place.
  • Identify, document, and track defects, working with engineering to drive timely resolution.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Monitor test execution, analyze failures, and continuously improve coverage and reliability.
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in Software Quality Assurance, including 3+ years focused on test automation.
  • Experience in testing web applications, APIs, mobile apps and backend services.
  • Experience designing an automated testing practice from scratch — not just extending one that already exists.
  • Comfort partnering with Product Managers who rely on you to help surface testing needs and edge cases
  • Hands-on experience with test automation frameworks (Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or similar).
  • Experience testing REST APIs (Postman or similar).
  • Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript; Ruby experience is a plus given our Rails services.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile practices.
  • Experience mentoring or upskilling other engineers in testing practices.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills; excellent communication.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with IoT, connected devices, or hardware-interfacing software — this is the environment you'd be working in day to day, though not a requirement.
  • Experience with EV charging, OCPP, or similar device-communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Performance or load testing experience.
A Note on Our Stack

We're primarily Python and TypeScript, with React on the frontend and some Ruby on Rails services. We're directionally leaning toward Playwright as our automation framework, but that's not locked in — it's unproven at our scale, and if you've got a strong point of view otherwise, we want to hear it.

Why Join SWTCH?

You'll be building something that doesn't exist yet at a company where your judgment on how to build it is genuinely trusted, not just tolerated. If you want ownership over a testing practice from day one — and the chance to shape how an engineering team thinks about quality — we'd love to talk.
