What will you do?

At Sun Life you will work as a Product Owner within the team. In this role you will be working work closely with onshore North American IT teams using Agile methodologies.

The Product Owner, within Insurance Solutions, Retail Advise & Solutions (RA&S) will be part of squad work closely with the Insurance Solutions Platform and Hubs to create the technology product roadmap and define the strategic vision for their squads based on the overall RA&S & DBTS organization’s vision. They have a deep understanding of the financial industry, expertise in technology, and are able to advocate for user needs.

A Product Owner demonstrates strategic thinking and manages dependencies with other teams while identifying, building, and managing strategic partnerships with various stakeholders. They work closely within their team to user feedback is translated into new developments. Product Owners are accountable for specific platform/journey OKRs based on the squad’s mission.

Your scope of work / key responsibilities:

  • This role will work with the Platforms, Hubs and squads to deliver solutions to achieve the desired business results
  • Collaborating with other Product Owners and business & technology stakeholders to ensure dependencies are understood and managed.  
  • Create and manage the product roadmap and backlog along with delegation of this work while remaining accountable for the outcomes. Work with stakeholders to adjust priorities and expectations in order to maximize the business value delivered. 
  • Assess and address technical risks.
  • Prioritize and manage items in the backlog and in collaboration with Platforms and Hubs
  • Support and motivate the squad through delivery and support in removing blockers
  • Participate in team activities: sprint planning, sprint review, retro, daily scrum, backlog refinement.
  • Work closely with business leaders to establish each product’s business value, and support messaging and communication as necessary

What you will need to succeed

  • Previous experience supporting the delivery of initiatives related to Individual Insurance products and mainframe and distributed systems, is beneficial
  • Understanding and work experience in agile development methodologies.
  • Strong collaboration skills, working with teams and cross functional teams
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills to analyze options and arrive at the best solution while building strong relationships and influencing
  • Innovative thinking that can break down barriers and provide unique solutions
  • Continuous learning mind-set in order to test-and-learn
  • Strong skills at process definition and optimization, developing and building upon best practices.
  • Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills
  • A proven track record of fostering a culture of trust, transparency and collaboration

Develop and nurture strong partnering relationships with Scrum Master, Delivery Team, and stakeholders: 

  • Develop strong partnerships with the Scrum Master and Delivery Teams to gain strong understanding of objectives, sustain open dialogue to manage product backlog efficiently.
  • Foster engagement and collaboration between teams to bring technology together ensuring it runs in an Agile way with the end product and customer experience at the forefront.
  • Influence a wide range of stakeholders (i.e., Business, Delivery, IT) to remove impediments and maximize team output.
  • Support and educate the Scrum Master and Delivery on agile principles and practices to preserve the team from external pressures which may inhibit its productivity.
  • Protect the team from outside interruptions and distractions.

We require someone with / key experience:

Preferred skills

  • Insurance business and processes, in particular Universal Life and Term products and Policy Issue
  • Exposure to distributed technologies.
  • Understanding or interest to learn the Insurance systems and inter-dependencies
  • Well versed in navigating complex organizational structures and the capability to develop productive working relations with internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrates knowledge of technology or ability to learn about technology and digital products, experience working on technical products is a plus
  • Strong collaborator with cross-functional teams from technology, design, business, and operations
  • Ability to manage and lead a team to push the solution forwards
  • Strong communication skills with comfort speaking with business and technology stakeholders and influencing others
  • Passion to challenge the status quo, find new solutions and drive out-of-the-box ideas
  • Believes in a non-hierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust
  • Not afraid to “roll up the sleeves” and seeks to go outside comfort zone to learn, pushing teams to do the same
  • Empowers others to fail, learn, and grow
