About Xanadu:

Xanadu’s mission is to build quantum computers that are useful and available to people everywhere.

At Xanadu, we are learners, innovators, researchers, collaborators and problem solvers. We are creating something that has never been built before. What we are doing is extremely hard, the classic moon shot. Few people in their life will be able to be a part of something like this, where if we are successful, the technologies we develop will solve some of the world’s most challenging problems, and literally change the world. And that is something to be excited about!

Your role and responsibilities:

As an industry leader in photonic quantum computing, Xanadu takes hardware very seriously! In this role, you will work within the Fabrication Process Engineering team to deliver Xanadu’s photonic quantum computing hardware. With your deep technical expertise and strong experience in back-end-of-line (BEOL) process integration, you will be responsible for developing process integration schemes used to build critical components of Xanadu’s quantum computing hardware.

  • Own the definition, development and implementation of BEOL process integration flows used to build photonic quantum computing hardware that meets strict performance specifications
  • Collaborate with internal and external photonics process engineers to refine BEOL fabrication processes for photonic quantum computing chips
  • Coordinate with FEOL process integration engineers and Packaging to ensure BEOL processes are compatible with all hardware and systems requirements
  • Work with Xanadu’s foundry partners to continuously improve integration schemes and balance competing fabrication requirements
  • Define and execute metrology and failure analysis plans to identify and mitigate failure modes and assess results of process integration experiments
  • Deliver integrated quantum photonics chips and circuits containing multiple active and passive components
  • Innovate in the space of photonic process development and process integration, especially with respect to BEOL processes for integrated photonics
  • Stay abreast of new developments in the fields of photonics fabrication process development and integration
Basic qualifications and experience:
  • PhD in physics, materials science, photonics or related field
  • ≥ 5 years of experience in photonics and/or semiconductor chip fabrication, with an emphasis on BEOL process integration and process development
  • Experience working in a foundry environment for semiconductor and/or integrated photonics products, including experience owning lots, working with an MES, etc.
  • Demonstrated track record of defining, developing and implementing BEOL process integration schemes for photonic and/or semiconductor chips and circuits
  • Experience with photonic and/or semiconductor fabrication processes, including some subset of: RDL processing, advanced packaging, passivation, etc.
  • Familiarity with standard semiconductor and photonics metrology and failure analysis techniques, including some subset of: SEM, TEM, AFM, defect inspection, ellipsometry, XRR/XRD, SIMS, Raman spectroscopy
  • Familiarity with photonic components, such as waveguides, beamsplitters, resonators, MZIs, etc.
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to tackle challenging problems and develop innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills and strong sense of teamwork
  • Ability to travel for work up to ~25% time
Preferred qualifications and experience:
  • ≥ 8 years of experience in photonics chip fabrication
  • ≥ 3 years of experience in BEOL photonics process integration
  • Experience in developing Cu/Au electroplating processes for low-impedance connections on non-planar surfaces, with special focus on heterogeneously integrated devices on a photonic platform
  • Experience with full product development cycle, from R&D through volume ramping
  • Experience with process development and process integration for integrated photonics
  • Experience coordinating with and managing external partners, including major semiconductor and photonics foundries
  • Experience in photonic quantum computing hardware development
  • Experience with BEOL tool procurement
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering finished integrated photonics products
  • Experience working in fabless companies
  • Although we would prefer candidates to be located in Toronto, we will consider a remote setup for the right person within North America
This is for a new position. Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and internal benchmarks. The base salary range is 160,000 - 200,000 CAD. You will also be eligible for equity and benefits.
