Job Summary

At HOOPP, we take a Total Portfolio Approach (TPA) to managing the Fund’s investment portfolio. TPA is an investment mindset centered on preparedness—ensuring the Fund is ready to respond when conditions change, whether driven by market dynamics or internal priorities. Capital and risk are allocated dynamically across asset classes and investment strategies, with the ultimate objective of safeguarding and enhancing the Fund’s funded status over the long term.

The Total Portfolio Group (TPG) sits at the center of this approach. On behalf of the CIO, TPG leads the Fund’s asset allocation, portfolio construction, total-fund analytics, and economic research, ensuring that investment decisions are grounded in a whole-of-fund perspective. The group also supports the CEO and CIO on structural design elements such as investment governance, benchmarking, and performance attribution, and advances HOOPP’s governance frameworks, including guardrails, investment policies, and Board reporting.

The Principal, Total Portfolio within HOOPP’s Total Portfolio Group (TPG) is responsible for designing and evaluating portfolio positioning and structure in alignment with the Total Portfolio Approach (TPA). Reporting to the Sr. Principal, Total Portfolio, this role focuses on integrating economic insights, portfolio construction principles, risk management, and real-world implementation to develop and present robust strategy recommendations to senior leadership, including the CIO and the Total Portfolio Approach Committee (TPAC). The Principal is expected to perform quantitative and scenario analysis, using advanced tools to inform evidence-based frameworks, and actively collaborates across teams to ensure intentional, well-structured portfolio outcomes that support the Fund’s long-term objectives. Success in this role is measured by the clarity and impact of portfolio strategy, the coherence of asset mix across markets, and the degree to which total portfolio thinking is embedded in organizational decision-making.

What you will do:

  • Develop total portfolio strategy and design frameworks that translate changes in the economic environment, risk appetite, and portfolio constraints into coherent positioning recommendations.

  • Design and evaluate relative asset class positioning across public and private markets within a Total Portfolio context.

  • Analyze and recommend intra-asset class positioning, including exposures across countries, regions, sectors, and styles, where relevant to total portfolio outcomes.

  • Develop customized portfolio solutions within asset classes, such as equity market constructions designed to deliver desired exposures, risk characteristics, and implementation efficiency.

  • Assess how shifts in market structure, correlations, liquidity conditions, and risk premia should influence portfolio composition and risk allocation.

  • Design and evaluate portfolio response scenarios under different economic and market environments, with a focus on preparedness, resilience, and long-term outcomes rather than short-term tactical timing.

  • Integrate portfolio design considerations with liquidity management, leverage, and balance-sheet constraints to ensure strategies are implementable and durable.

  • Support the CIO and CEO with clear, well-structured analysis on total portfolio positioning options, trade-offs, and risk implications under TPA.

  • Work closely with Public Markets, Private Markets, Risk, Finance, and Actuarial teams to ensure portfolio strategies are grounded in real-world implementation considerations.

  • Contribute to Asset Liability Committee (ALC) discussions through portfolio reviews and strategy discussions, supporting alignment, communication, and transparency with the Board (not decision-making).

  • Support the preparation of Board and Committee materials by clearly articulating the portfolio rationale, design choices, and trade-offs underpinning total portfolio positioning.

  • Continuously refine portfolio frameworks that embed adaptability, cross-asset integration, and disciplined risk usage under TPA.

  • Mentor and provide leadership to junior members within TPG, fostering a strong total-portfolio and “one fund” mindset.

What you bring:

  • 10+ years of experience in total portfolio strategy, asset allocation, portfolio construction, or investment strategy within a sophisticated institutional investor or global asset owner.

  • Demonstrated expertise in portfolio design, including asset class allocation, portfolio construction, geographic and sector positioning, and factor-based exposures.

  • Strong understanding of public and private markets, liquidity considerations, and portfolio implementation constraints.

  • Proven ability to design and evaluate customized portfolio solutions within asset classes (e.g., equity or credit exposures).

  • Experience translating macroeconomic and market environments into portfolio-level implications, without relying on narrow or siloed frameworks.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to independently produce high-quality portfolio analysis.

  • Ability to influence senior leaders through clarity of thinking, structured analysis, and sound judgment.

  • Comfort operating in environments characterized by uncertainty, evolving regimes, and long investment horizons.

  • Hands-on mindset: intellectually curious, energetic, and willing to both think deeply and execute directly.

  • Graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • High standards of professionalism, collaboration, and intellectual integrity, aligned with HOOPP’s values.
