About the Team

We, the Elastic Platform Control Plane team, are looking to add a Software Engineering Manager to lead our Stateful Foundations team. This team is in charge of evolving and operating the foundational services of our Elastic Cloud Managed (aka Hosted) and Elastic Cloud Self-Managed product offerings. These foundational distributed services constitute the orchestration layer of the Elastic Cloud and allow users to build new Elastic Clusters, and expand or modify existing ones. These services run on multiple cloud provider platforms and are built on Docker, Scala, Java, Python, and our own custom distributed system architecture based on ZooKeeper.

Our team is a dynamic and talented group of engineers based all around the world, covering a multitude of countries and time zones. We are solving hard problems with creativity and ingenuity, and we have fun along the way. This is your chance to lead an extraordinary team of high-performance engineers, and help us drive our engineering efforts, raise our operational excellence bar, and make Elastic history.

About the Role

You will lead a globally distributed team of 9 engineers in our organization. Our engineers are in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, India, Canada, and the USA. They are solving some very hard problems using an innovative technology stack. This role also requires coordination with Engineering and Product Management teams and is an excellent opportunity to work in a collaborative cross-team setting. With your team and your peers, you will iterate and grow our organization's processes and software as well.

What You Will Be Doing

People Management

  • You will build and enhance the team culture, amplifying cohesion and collaboration among team members, and establishing a culture of operational excellence aligned with our Elastic’s source code.
  • You will provide continuous feedback to your engineers, restating your expectations and communicating clear outcomes. You will help them grow to the next level and coach them while on the job.
  • You will audit your team execution and processes, and find ways to increase their efficiency and efficacy.
  • You will communicate performance gaps and act quickly to set your team members up for success.

Project Management

  • You will define yearly roadmaps, aligned with business priorities and in collaboration with key partners in Product and Engineering to help your team make good decisions.
  • You will establish measurable outcomes, and assign clear ownership to engineers to drive them forward.
  • You will track and steer the execution of work and report on results, status, risks, and risk mitigation plans.
  • You will be a beacon of light for your engineers when ambiguity and/or time pressure are high, letting them know what your rationale is, so they too learn how to prioritize their own work and make their own right decisions at their level.

Partner Management

  • You will build trust and influence your partners to define the right outcomes and vision for your team.
  • You will form strong partnerships with key players to drive alignment and deliver the right outcomes.
  • You will lead by example, demonstrating the behaviors and values that we want Elasticians to emulate.
  • Your partners will recognize your team as reliable, predictable, and highly performant.

What You Bring Along

  • 3+ years experience leading teams of software engineers.
  • Your teams have delivered software for a SaaS service.
  • Your teams have operated SaaS services requiring oncall schedules.
  • Solid experience with 3rd-party Cloud hosting services (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Solid experience with distributed system architectures.
  • Experience building a multi-region cloud infrastructure and cloud orchestration.
  • Experience, deep passion and love for automated testing and CICD pipelines.
  • Experience with secure coding practices (static code analysis, security code reviews, etc.)
  • 5+ years previously as a hands-on software engineer (Java, Scala, Python), you understand software development deeply.

Bonus Points

  • Passion for SaaS business metrics like growth, churn, operational load, and retention.
  • Experience supporting customer problems and communication.
  • Experience running remote-only geographically distributed teams.
