Job Description:

Position Purpose

The Operations Accountant is responsible for recording/reviewing accounts payable and receivable transactions, preparing and processing general and recurring journal entries, validating tax allocation, account reconciliations and follow up. Proper judgement and analysis of controls and processes is necessary in order to ensure the integrity and accuracy of expenditure processes. In addition, the incumbent will respond to client/vendor enquires and provide support to Senior Accountants as required. Where applicable, identify and recommend process improvement and document processes within their area of responsibility.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage end-to-end accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, ensuring transactions are accurately coded, approved, recorded, and processed in accordance with organizational policies and accounting standards.
  • Monitor vendor payments, customer invoicing, and outstanding balances to ensure timely settlement of liabilities, collection of receivables, and effective cash flow management.
  • Maintain the integrity of financial records by preparing journal entries, verifying tax coding, recording accruals and prepaids, and ensuring transactions are posted to the correct accounting period.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, cash receipts, deposits, revenue transactions, and financial records to identify discrepancies and ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Administer donation and charitable receipting processes, including the recording of donations, issuance of tax receipts, and allocation of funds to appropriate accounts.
  • Support assigned ministry units by processing invoices, expense claims, deposits, and financial transactions while providing guidance on financial procedures and best practices.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with ministry units, vendors, and external clients by resolving accounting issues, responding to inquiries, and providing timely, customer-focused support.
  • Ensure compliance with Salvation Army financial policies, budget guidelines, approval authorities, and documentation requirements, escalating exceptions and concerns as appropriate.
  • Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, financial reports, and other accounting analyses to support audit, compliance, and operational requirements.
  • Develop and communicate business requirements, process documentation, recommendations, and solutions to support decision-making, process improvements, and stakeholder understanding of financial impacts.

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Completion of a university degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of progressive experience in an accounting or finance environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex account reconciliations, financial analysis, and journal entry preparation with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and quality standards.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills when interpreting financial information and resolving discrepancies.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential financial and organizational information.
  • Strong commitment to ethical practices, accountability, and compliance with established policies and procedures.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $50,897.60 to $63,627.20 with a maximum of $76,356.80.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
