About the role

We are looking for Mobile Accessibility Specialist for our growing team!

As a Mobile Accessibility Specialist, you will leverage your technical and accessibility expertise to support an accessibility transformation across mobile teams and the design system at the Lab. You’ll collaborate with the Accessibility Program Lead, the design system team, and product teams to set new standards, influence sustainable change, and enable distributed expertise in mobile accessibility.  

What you'll do here:

  • Serve as an expert, advisor and coach in digital accessibility for native mobile apps (iOS and Android). 

  • Contribute to the development of internal mobile accessibility standards and guidance for developers, QAs and designers 

  • Develop mobile accessibility acceptance criteria for user stories 

  • Establish standard methodology for assessing accessibility of mobile apps and components leveraging WCAG 2.2 A/AA standards and accessibility documentation for iOS and Android.

  • Contribute to the revision of internal processes to integrate accessibility, such as testing strategy and tooling, prioritization, and accessibility monitoring.

  • Develop training materials and lead trainings for mobile developers, QAs and designers to enable self-sufficiency.

  • Collaborate with and upskill design system mobile developers to ensure our iOS and Android design system components are as accessible as possible

  • Create documentation to define what the design system provides and what product teams are responsible for to ensure accessibility.

  • Evaluate components and occasionally do large-scale assessments of native apps for accessibility 

  • Conduct design reviews and provide feedback.

What you bring to the table:

  • Passion for digital accessibility. 

  • Bilingualism (French and English) – Need to interact on a regular basis with colleagues across the country.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills with all kinds of stakeholders. 

  • At least 3 years development experience creating native mobile applications for iOS and/or Android. 

  • At least 2 years of experience working in digital accessibility 

  • Sufficient familiarity with both iOS and Android development to provide technical guidance to all mobile developers. 

  • Strong understanding of iOS and Android accessibility APIs and documentation.

  • Experience evaluating native mobile apps for WCAG 2.1/2.0 AA conformance. 

  • Proficient in testing with VoiceOver and Talkback screen readers 

  • Ability to clearly explain and document accessibility issues and recommendations on how to fix them.

  • Experience performing design reviews and translating into user stories for native apps. 

  • Familiarity with integrating accessibility testing into unit tests and agile development processes.

  • Experience collaborating with various roles including Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Designers, Content Creators, Business Analysts, Developers, and Quality Assurance Testers, and helping them understand how accessibility fits into their responsibilities. 

  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.

Asset:

  • Experience with web accessibility. 

  • Experience influencing transformation in large organizations. 

  • Experience with research or testing with people with disabilities. 

  • Lived experience with disability.

  • Contract length: 12-month initial contract (or till end of 2025) with possible extension.
