Your role

As the Manager, Business & Rights, Scripted, you work closely with the independent production community and are responsible for negotiating and drafting licensing agreements and business recommendations for the Senior Director, Scripted & Acquired for Business & Rights. You decide how to approach negotiations and structure deals that meet CBC’s rights and financing strategies and priorities. In addition, you have the ability to efficiently assess proposed project budgets and calculate the appropriate level of CBC and third-party funding to be included within the financing structure. You will make recommendations and seek approvals from the Senior Director on deal terms that best represent CBC’s priorities and interests. As the Manager, Business & Rights, Scripted you will also manage the creation of streamlined (and nuanced) contracts that represent and protect CBC's position.

Other responsibilities of this role include:

  • Taking a tailored approach to deal and contract negotiations for a wide range of projects including big budget scripted series intended for CBC’s platforms including but not limited to primetime television, CBC Gem, CBC FAST Channels and YouTube.

  • Ensuring CBC's contractual requirements and business interests are secured on a consistent and nuanced basis across programs of similar scope.

  • Reviewing and recommending third-party financing sources for each project with a critical eye to ensure eligibility and compliance with oft-changing requirements.

  • Reviewing third party agreements, including agreements from public and private funding agencies, and deals with other Canadian and international media platforms to ensure harmonization with CBC’s rights.

  • Applying strategic thinking to funding agency applications, to maximize benefits while ensuring CBC is accurately and strategically represented.

  • Assisting in research, management and presentation of rights data across genres, platforms, and windows of exploitation.

  • Refining our business approach through continuous innovation, agile processes, and market-leading thinking about rights and financing models.

  • Authorizing contract payments where required.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A post-secondary education or related experience, with a strong preference for formal legal training (contract law, entertainment and copyright law).

  • In-depth knowledge of all forms of current media, negotiating techniques, corporate business practices, and the funding rules of various agencies including CMF, private funds for screen-based media, provincial agencies across Canada, and tax credit authorities.

  • Facility with approved artificial intelligence technologies to improve workflow and data analysis. Eagerness to learn and adapt to emerging technologies.

  • Experience working with big budget scripted content including comedy and drama series would be considered an asset.

  • Financial and contract management experience. Role includes estimating and validating calculations of tax credits and independent drafting of complex agreements.

  • Strong understanding of linear and streaming entertainment business models, social media, and other online platforms including FAST channels.

  • Strong computer skills including Google suite, Excel, Microsoft Office and Adobe.

  • Ability to comprehend and translate the concerns of creative producers/directors/creative heads into appropriate contracts within the constraints of the applicable regulatory bodies, CBC policies and funding guidelines.

  • Creativity and innovative problem-solving skills to address all policy and production issues in a manner satisfactory to all parties.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including an ability to work with both emerging and experienced producers.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, and work under pressure.

  • Ability to exercise judgment and work independently taking initiative.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Able and willing to work beyond regular office hours during peak periods of activity as well as the flexibility to attend industry functions and events.

  • Bilingualism (French/English) would be considered an asset.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
