Join our collaborative Legal Affairs Department and work alongside a team of experienced lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants supporting litigation matters related to Group disability benefits, Group and individual life insurance, Critical illness insurance, Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) claims. As a Legal Assistant at Desjardins Financial Security (DFS), you will play an integral role in supporting the litigation team throughout the lifecycle of legal files. You will be responsible for coordinating administrative and legal processes, maintaining litigation records, preparing legal documentation, and ensuring deadlines are met in accordance with court procedures and internal standards. This position is ideal for a highly organized and detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment. You will have the opportunity to work on complex insurance and disability-related litigation matters while collaborating closely with legal professionals and external stakeholders. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, sound judgment, professionalism, discretion with confidential information, and the ability to effectively manage competing priorities while delivering exceptional support to the legal team. More specifically, you will be required to: 

  • Provide comprehensive administrative, clerical, and legal support to lawyers handling litigation matters, ensuring efficient file management and workflow coordination

  • Manage and maintain physical and electronic litigation files, including document organization, records management, and file tracking throughout all stages of litigation

  • Prepare, format, proofread, and assemble legal documents such as affidavits of documents, motion records, document briefs, pleadings, correspondence, and court filings

  • Monitor litigation timelines, court deadlines, limitation periods, and key file milestones to ensure compliance with procedural requirements and proactive follow-up

  • Draft routine legal correspondence, reports, templates, and other legal and administrative documentation while maintaining accuracy and professionalism

  • Coordinate meetings, discoveries, mediations, examinations, client appointments, and other litigation-related activities, including calendar management and scheduling

  • Arrange document services, court filings, and communications with external counsel, courts, insurers, experts, and other stakeholders while ensuring compliance with applicable procedures

  • Provide ongoing legal and administrative support to the litigation team by managing document production, transcription, scanning, filing, data entry, and process improvement initiatives while contributing to a collaborative team environment

What you bring to the table 

  • College diploma in a related field

  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience  

  • Please note that other combinations of qualifications and relevant experience may be considered 

  • Experience with litigation 

  • Experience with insured disputes 

  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure (with respect to deadlines and document formats) 

  • Intermediate knowledge of document management software
