Location: ALS Environmental, Waterloo
Reports to: Organics Manager
About the Position:
The Lab Assistant 1 will be working with client samples providing preparations, extractions and analysis of these samples for routine organic laboratory maintenance parameters tasks and simple analyses.

Please note this is a contract position and involves working the overnight shift.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
• Operate lab instrument/equipment such as pipettes, shakers, centrifuges, pH meters, balances etc.;
• Perform instrument/equipment calibration and maintenance as required;
• Perform sample preparation such as weighing samples, sample transferring and sample concentration;
• Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference material, etc.;
• Carry out all required data processing (i.e., calculations, data review, data entry etc.);
• Work in accordance with safety procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
• General laboratory/glassware clean-up and maintenance;
• General laboratory duties as required (vial labelling, supply restocking, extract disposal, etc.);
• Produce all tasks within specific turnaround times (TAT);
• Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
• Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Must be capable of working with minimal supervision;
• Must be well organised, and able to work independently as well as part of a team;
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions.

Required Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or equivalent;
• Previous Lab experience, full training will be provided.
Physical Demands:
• Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
• Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
• Ability to stand for a full shift;
• You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
• Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and may require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

  • An estimated hourly pay of $19.82 CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
