Job Description

The Toronto Star is hiring an experienced, authoritative, and energetic journalist to join our newsroom as an Arts & Culture Reporter with a dedicated focus on owning the arts beat of Toronto. This role falls within the Journalist classification in the Star’s Editorial Department.

The ideal candidate is an experienced reporter with the drive and contacts to authoritatively cover the city's major arts stories, including its institutions and power players. This includes confidently handling sensitive and complex issues within the arts community, while also providing comprehensive coverage of large-scale cultural events. This role requires the ability to identify and report on the biggest stories in the city's arts landscape and to also produce shorter, high-impact written pieces and multimedia that resonate with our audience.

Journalists can be re-assigned to any newsroom department across a variety of assignments and locations, depending on future business needs.

Qualifications

  • Proven professional experience as a news reporter, with at least some experience with arts and culture.
  • Excellent news judgment and the ability to find, pursue, and break major stories.
  • Advanced writing skills with a clean style and verve, capable of creating engaging, daily content.
  • Experience with alternative story forms like short-form video, listicles, interactive graphics and podcasts.
  • A self-starter who is flexible, able to generate quality story ideas, and capable of simultaneously managing multiple projects.
  • Relentlessly high standards; detail-oriented and deadline-driven with the ability to produce succinct, clear, and accurate copy.
  • Strong interviewing and newsgathering skills and instincts, with the ability to develop and maintain a wide network of contacts and sources.
  • Familiarity with access to information procedures and databases.
  • Well-versed in CP style.

Salary: $60,547.97 - $95,740.19

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be located in Toronto.
