The FPGA Design Engineer at Evertz contributes to the development of advanced broadcast equipment used in real-time video and audio production, processing, and transport for Live sports production, News broadcasting, and Large-scale media workflows.  This includes FPGA-based implementations for SDI, IP video, compression pipelines, timing-sensitive switching, and signal processing within high-performance platforms such as modular frames, blades, and networked systems.
Engineers in this role work closely with system architects, software teams, and hardware designers to deliver reliable, low-latency solutions used in live production, playout, and contribution workflows.
Responsibilities

  • Design and implement FPGA logic for real-time video and audio processing pipelines (SDI, UHD/HD, IP-based media).
  • Develop FPGA-based modules supporting SMPTE standards, synchronization, timing-sensitive switching, and media transportation.
  • Participate in system architecture design for broadcast products.
  • Perform simulation, synthesis, place & route, and timing closure for high-throughput, low-latency designs.
  • Validate FPGA functionality in lab environments using broadcast test signals and measurement equipment.
  • Debug complex system issues involving video artifacts, timing misalignment, or data integrity problems.
  • Collaborate with embedded software and control-plane teams (APIs, management interfaces, orchestration systems).
  • Maintain design documentation, including video pipeline diagrams, interface specifications, and test results.
  • Support product bring-up, manufacturing validation, and customer-facing issue resolution when needed.
  • Integrate IP cores for video interfaces and transport streams.
  • Drive timing closure for complex multi-clock domain designs.
  • Debug system-level issues spanning FPGA, hardware, and software layers.
  • Optimize designs for latency, resource utilization, and determinism.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 1–5 years of industry experience in FPGA design and development
  • Experienced in HDL design and debugging for complex systems
  • Solid hands-on experience with FPGA code design
  • Experience with simulation and advanced verification techniques
  • Hands-on debugging experience in lab environments
  • Strong understanding of digital logic design and synchronous systems
  • Experience with HDL development (VHDL preferred, Verilog, SystemVerilog)
  • Familiarity with FPGA development tools (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus)
  • Understanding of simulation and verification methodologies
  • Ability to analyze and debug hardware/software/system-level issues
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with broadcast video standards
  • Understanding of video timing and synchronization
  • Exposure to real-time video/audio processing pipelines
  • Experience with high-speed FPGA interfaces such as Ethernet, PCIe, DDR:
  • Familiarity with packet-based media transport
  • Experience in system-level integration of FPGA and control systems
  • Scripting and automation using Python, Tcl, or similar for build, test, or validation flows
  • Experience with lab instrumentation, such as Oscilloscopes, waveform monitors, video analyzers, pattern generators
  • Knowledge of version control and collaborative development workflows, such as Git and code reviews.
  • Exposure to modular broadcast platforms (e.g., routing, processing blades, chassis-based systems)
  • Experience working in fast-paced product development environments (Agile or similar)
