The Opportunity

Aviva has an exciting opportunity for an Equipment Breakdown Specialist _Claims Consultant within our Engineering Services Department, supporting the Ontario region.

Reporting to the Ontario Regional Manager, you will be responsible for managing assigned Equipment Breakdown claims and conducting inspections related to claims investigations, loss control, and jurisdictional requirements as needed. This role combines technical inspection expertise, risk assessment, and claims management to support our customers, brokers, and business partners.

What you’ll do
  • Manage the full claims lifecycle, from First Notice of Loss through investigation, settlement, and payment.

  • Investigate Equipment Breakdown losses and prepare detailed technical and claims reports.

  • Communicate effectively with insureds, brokers, adjusters, contractors, and other stakeholders to facilitate timely and effective claim resolution.

  • Appoint, coordinate, and manage external experts and consultants in support of claim investigations.

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Equipment Breakdown and Commercial Property policy wordings and coverage.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers by providing technical expertise, marketing support, and participating in customer and broker site visits.

  • Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and engineering teams to deliver exceptional customer service and risk management solutions.

  • Ability to perform loss control inspections of insured risks and jurisdictional inspections; and preparing survey and assessment reports is an added pus but not a requirement.

What You’ll Bring:  

  • 5–10 years of experience in commercial property insurance, claims handling, risk engineering, or a related technical field.

  • University degree or college diploma in Engineering, Science, Business, or related discipline.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound business decisions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experience working with databases and claims management systems.

  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout Ontario as required.

  • Professional designations such as CIP, P.Eng., or CRM would be considered an asset.

  • Experience in building maintenance, industrial operations, manufacturing, power generation, mechanical systems, or production facility maintenance is an asset but not required.

  • Technical knowledge of Equipment Breakdown exposures, boilers and pressure vessels, electrical systems, HVAC systems, or mechanical equipment is considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of CSA standards, ASME codes, and National Board requirements is preferred but not required.

  • Ability to obtain National Board Commission and applicable provincial certifications is preferred but not required.

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $75,000 to $90,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
