Job Description:

The People and Culture team provides full Human Resources support to over 30,000 employees globally. The team is organized and delivers work via a HRBP and Centre of Expertise model with HR practitioners based in each Sun Life region. Activities across the global team enable the successful support and delivery of business imperatives through our people ensuring Sun Life continues to achieve sustainable long-term growth.

The Director, Workforce Transformation will play a key role in shaping and executing a forward-looking workforce transformation agenda. The role operates across HR groups and focuses on proactive, future-focused digital, talent and workforce initiatives that align talent capabilities with organizational objectives. The role is on the front line of leading and managing high-impact special projects that drive organizational transformation, modernize organization design, and ensure the organization is prepared for future business demands through data-driven planning and transformation programs.

The role will be instrumental in shaping the future of the workforce with a focus on AI transformation, leading strategic workforce planning and addressing necessary job re-design, ensuring optimal use of talent and workforce effectiveness.

What will you do?

Shape the Future Workforce Agenda:

The Director is responsible for moving workforce strategy from analysis to execution, including:

  • Translating GenAI, digital, and business strategy into forward‑looking workforce implications
  • Identifying where work will change fastest, where talent risks will concentrate, and where timing mismatches between productivity and growth may emerge
  • Framing clear “future workforce scenarios” to inform executive decision‑making (not predictions, but decision‑useful views of risk and choice)

Support Enterprise Strategic Workforce Planning & Role Evolution:

The role provides thought partnership to how roles and work will evolve over time, particularly as automation and AI augment human effort:

  • Leading enterprise workforce planning that looks across functions, not in silos
  • Driving job and role redesign to reflect new human‑AI task mixes
  • Partnering with HRBPs and COEs to align workforce plans, talent actions, and reskilling investments
  • Ensuring productivity gains can be redeployed into growth, capacity, or new value, rather than stranded

Orchestrate Cross‑Functional Transformation Work:

The Director operates at the enterprise level, not within a single COE or function, by:

  • Leading complex, time‑bound transformation initiatives that cut across HR, Technology, and the business
  • Serving as an integrator across HRBPs, Talent, L&D, Total Rewards, and Digital teams
  • Bringing coherence to fragmented efforts by aligning initiatives under a single workforce transformation narrative and roadmap

Act as a Strategic Thought Partner to the Enterprise:

Finally, the Director plays an essential enterprise advisory role, by:

  • Synthesizing complex signals across the organization into clear executive insights
  • Helping leaders understand “what this means for our people” at each stage of GenAI adoption
  • Bringing a systems view—connecting org design, talent, leadership, and culture decisions
  • Maintaining a long‑term orientation while helping teams act in the near term

What do you need to succeed?

  • 7-10+ years of experience in workforce transformation, strategic workforce planning, HR strategy, organizational design, or management consulting
  • Strong strategic thinking, with the ability to pivot. The incumbent must be able to prioritize and align work with changing demands, and find synergies within ambiguous, undefined requests.
  • Strong consultative and influencing skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships. The incumbent must partner with leaders in Human Resources and the business to build relationships, collaborate and recommend solutions that solve business problems.
  • Strong innovation orientation. The incumbent must be able to gather external intelligence on talent best practices and apply learnings to the build or reinvention of Sun Life talent practices that enable the company’s strategic priorities. Experience with and interest in AI transformation is preferred.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with experience in workforce analytics and modeling
  • Be an adaptable and responsive partner to key stakeholders across Human Resources and the Business. The incumbent will liaise with teams across the organization who have different priorities / needs.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to plan, organize and resource assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
  • We have a strong preference for candidates that bring prior professional consulting experience coupled with hands on orientation, possess familiarity with digital and Agile best practices, as well as Organizational Effectiveness skills and experience.
