About Opendoor

At Opendoor our mission is to tilt the world in favor of homeowners and those who aim to become one. Homeownership matters. It's how people build wealth, stability, and community. It's how families put down roots, how neighborhoods strengthen, how the future gets built. We're building the modern system of homeownership giving people the freedom to buy and sell on their own terms. We’ve built an end-to-end online experience that has already helped thousands of people and we’re just getting started.

About the role

At Opendoor we're tilting the world in favor of homeowners. We ship every week, test in the open, and judge our work by one thing: whether homeowners end up better off.

We're hiring a Director-level People Business Partner to operate as a business leader on the company's most critical teams — using AI and data to drive execution, insight, and speed. This role exists to raise the bar, increase talent density, and make the org stronger every week — so leaders execute faster and better.

This is not a traditional HR role. This is a high-judgment, high-trust operator role.

What you'll do

This role has five core product areas. Each has customers, outcomes, and measurable results.

Org Effectiveness

  • Diagnose structural gaps before they become hiring or performance problems
  • Model team design options with tradeoffs across headcount, span, layers, and role clarity
  • Own workforce planning as a live model, not a once-a-year exercise
  • Surface org health signals proactively using data
Talent & Performance
  • Drive calibration with rigor — differentiate performance with clarity and conviction, hold the bar
  • Own talent development for high-potential leaders and drive decisive action on performance gaps
  • Run performance conversations as a coach to the manager, not a mediator
  • Lead with attrition rates, performance distributions, hiring velocity, and org spans — not anecdotes
Leader Effectiveness
  • Be the thinking partner executives actually call — not the one they CC on HR issues
  • Push back on leaders when their instinct is wrong — frame it as tradeoffs, not policy
  • Provide direct, honest feedback and help leaders drive accountability through change
People Product GTM
  • Own adoption of People initiatives within your client group
  • Build a GTM plan for every People product launch: target user, narrative, rollout sequence, success metrics
  • Track adoption metrics post-launch and redesign where needed
Build People Systems for Humans and Agents
  • Design People workflows and systems with both humans and agents as users — and ship them that way
  • Build and ship AI-powered workflows across performance management, workforce planning, talent insights, and decision support
  • Use AI to accelerate every workflow — draft comms, synthesize data, model org options, prep for meetings
  • Identify opportunities to automate anything that doesn't require judgment

What You'll Need

  • 10+ years of operating experience, ideally including time in People, strategy, product, or consulting roles at high-growth technology companies
  • Proven strategic partner to senior leaders in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
  • Strong operator mindset — you understand how companies are built, scaled, and corrected
  • High judgment and comfort navigating complex talent and performance decisions
  • Analytical rigor — you default to data to drive decisions
  • Fluent in AI and automation — and uses both daily to do the work, not just to talk about it
  • Direct, low-ego, high-candor communication style
  • Bias toward action, speed, and simplicity
Location

Toronto, ON

We're looking for candidates who are enthusiastic about an in-office culture — people who want to build alongside their teammates, not from a distance. This role is based at our Toronto office (468 King St W), 4 days a week.

Relocation assistance is available for candidates moving to Toronto.
