POSITION OVERVIEW

BDC is the only bank dedicated exclusively to Canadian entrepreneurs. Within BDC Capital, the Growth & Transition Capital (GTC) team provides flexible financing solutions—including subordinated debt, mezzanine, and quasi-equity—to support business growth, ownership transition, and acquisitions. As Director, GTC, you lead the origination, evaluation, and execution of investment opportunities while managing a portfolio of client relationships. Your work contributes directly to the success and growth of Canadian businesses.


CHALLENGES TO BE MET


  • Originate new financing and investment opportunities through structured business development activities (e.g., networking, referrals, outreach, industry events).
  • Analyze and evaluate complex financing opportunities and recommend investment decisions using structured financial analysis and risk assessment.
  • Structure and underwrite transactions, including subordinated debt, mezzanine, and quasi-equity, aligned with BDC Capital investment criteria.
  • Lead due diligence processes, including financial, operational, and market analysis.
  • Manage and monitor a portfolio of investments post-closing, including:
    • Portfolio risk assessment
    • Financial performance tracking
    • Client relationship management
    • Amendments, repayments, and periodic reviews (quarterly and annual)
  • Develop and execute portfolio management and exit strategies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with entrepreneurs, financial institutions, co-investors, and industry stakeholders to generate deal flow.
  • Create and execute an individual business development and marketing plan aligned with team objectives.
  • Support portfolio companies by leveraging internal and external resources to help achieve growth objectives.
  • Maintain an individual professional development plan to enhance technical and business development capabilities.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in lending, corporate finance, or investment roles
  • Experience with:
    • Transaction origination
    • Client relationship management
    • Portfolio management
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Financial analysis (e.g., financial statements, ratios, cash flow analysis)
    • Financial modeling (e.g., Excel-based forecasting, scenario analysis)
    • Credit risk assessment
  • Proven business development results, including sourcing and closing transactions
  • Experience negotiating financing terms and structuring deals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for client-facing interactions and internal investment presentations
  • Ability to manage multiple transactions and priorities simultaneously with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team-based deal review environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA (Master of Business Administration)
  • Professional designation: CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant), CBV (Chartered Business Valuator), and/or CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst)
  • Experience with subordinated debt, mezzanine financing, or quasi-equity structures
  • Established professional network within the Canadian business or financial ecosystem
  • Experience supporting growth-stage companies, acquisition financing, or ownership transition transactions
