Role Overview

We are looking for a Director of FP&A with deep expertise in capital activity and strategic finance.  Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) will be responsible for the capital markets support and related  strategic analysis. This role is a key strategic partner to the executive leadership team, responsible for driving timely, responsive, and accurate inputs into all capital activities including debt, equity and M&A processes. This is a highly visible position that blends FP&A leadership with capital markets execution and requires the ability to operate at both a strategic and analytical level.  The Director will not only maintain and enhance FreshBooks’ outward facing forecast models and KPI reporting, but will also manage the company’s capital processes and VDRs to ensure a great working experience with our external partners.  This key leadership role will also be responsible for reviewing and supporting internal forecasting and accounting practices to ensure compatibility with our outward facing efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Capital Activities: 
    • Lead financial planning, modeling, and analysis related to:
  • Debt financing and refinancing
  • Equity raises and investor presentations
  • Private equity transactions, including minority/majority sales
  • Mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investments

  • Build and maintain complex financial models (3-statement, LBO, scenario analysis) to support capital decisions
  • Partner with executive leadership on long-term financial strategy and capital allocation
  • Support due diligence processes, data rooms, and interactions with investors, lenders, and advisors
  • Develop board-level materials and communicate financial insights clearly to stakeholders
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with accounting, legal, data, revenue and operations teams
  • Enhance FP&A processes, tools, and reporting to support a scaling SaaS business

  • Strategic Leadership and Stakeholder Management: Serve as a primary partner to the CFO and executive team, building and managing deep relationships with senior leadership and board members to align financial planning with the company's overall strategic goals.
  • Executive Collaboration: Partner closely with the Controller and other executive-level department heads to ensure seamless, organization-wide information sharing and financial alignment for capital activity.
  • Advanced Financial Analysis and Board Reporting: Direct the preparation and presentation of comprehensive Board materials, including modeling, analysis and high-level strategic summaries. 
  • Strategic Performance Management: Lead the definition and benchmarking of KPIs and OKRs necessary to support the company’s capital activity. 
  • Sophisticated Financial Modeling: Oversee and enhance the company’s financial projections to evaluate business sensitivities, optimize capital structure, and provide critical data for potential fundraising or M&A.
  • Culture and Team Mentorship: Champion and promote company values while as a member of a high-performing FP&A team, fostering a culture of excellence and collaborative growth.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or Accounting. 
  • Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience in finance, with significant tenure in private equity, hedge funds, capital markets advisory, or investment banking.
  • Background: Experience at a top-tier professional services firm (e.g., Bain, BCG, McKinsey) or a leading investment bank (e.g., Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) is strongly preferred.
  • Capital Markets Expertise: Proven track record of successfully executing capital markets transactions (e.g., debt issuances, private equity transactions or M&A) and managing complex capital structures.
  • Technical Mastery: Expert-level financial modeling skills, including the ability to model complex financing scenarios and valuation impact. Highly proficient in Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with other data processing / visualization tools (Tableau, Looker, Alteryx).  Data analysis skills including SQL proficiency are a must.
  • Executive Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex financial and capital markets concepts to senior executives, Board members, and external investors.
  • Collaboration Skills: Extensive experience working with company executives, team leads and peers to collaboratively drive capital activity.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep familiarity with subscriber-based (SaaS) business models and how they are valued by investors and partners.
  • Strategic Acumen: Expert understanding of global business strategy and the ability to link capital activity directly to shareholder value creation.

Additional Valuable Skills, Experience, or Credentials
  • Preferred Education: MBA, CPA, or CFA.
  • Global Experience: Experience with international financial operations and regulations is a plus.

Working Conditions / Additional Notes
This role is open to remote candidates within Canada and the United States. Travel to Toronto and various other locations in North America and Europe (up to 12x/year) may be required.


Compensation

At FreshBooks, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set.

The total compensation for this role ranges from CA$145,200 - CA$181,000 per year, which may include participation in our incentive programs. Additionally, this position offers an equity grant and immediate enrollment in FreshBooks' comprehensive benefits program, detailed below.
