About the Role:

As a Data Scientist, you’ll work closely with Product, Business, Data, and Engineering teams to help Borrowell make better decisions and build better experiences for our members. Your work may range from analyzing member behavior and evaluating experiments to developing recommendation systems and predictive models that improve marketplace performance.

This is a hands-on role with significant ownership. You’ll work on problems from initial scoping through implementation, measurement, and iteration, partnering directly with stakeholders to understand the business problem before determining the right solution.

During your first year, you can expect to:

  • Deliver measurable business impact – Own 1-2 end-to-end data science projects, from problem framing and analysis through implementation, measurement, and iteration.
  • Use data to solve business problems – Apply analytics, experimentation and machine learning where appropriate, while recognizing when a simpler solution is the better choice.
  • Contribute to Borrowell’s personalization and recommendation systems – Help improve how products and experiences are matched to members across the marketplace and member lifecycle.
  • Partner closely with stakeholders – Work with Product, Business, Data, and Engineering teams to turn business questions into actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Help scale the team’s capabilities – Contribute reusable datasets, features, documentation, monitoring, and processes that make it easier to build and maintain data products over time.

Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience applying data science, analytics and machine learning to solve real business problems.
  • Able to break down ambiguous business questions, identify the right data to use and recommend a practical path forward.
  • Experience building and evaluating predictive models, including feature engineering, model validation, and handling challenges such as class imbalance, leakage, and data quality issues.
  • Experience with experimentation and A/B testing.
  • Strong Python skills and SQL skills for Data Science work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – able to clearly explain insights, recommendations, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences..
  • Comfortable owning work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience working with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Redshift.
  • Experience with Looker or other BI tools for analysis and stakeholder reporting.
  • Experience in consumer technology, fintech, marketplaces or growth-oriented product environments.

Benefits
  • The Opportunity - join and have a major impact at a growing company that is helping make financial stability possible for everybody
  • Comprehensive Health Benefits - medical, dental, vision, and paramedical health benefits for you and your family, with extra yearly coverage for psychotherapists and massage therapists
  • Additional Health Benefits - virtual benefit offering that allows you to connect 24/7 with nurses, doctors and mental health professionals

We are remote-first across Canada with an office in Toronto. This role will require you to attend in-person meetings and team-building events. While this role is remote, we are currently only able to hire candidates physically located in Ontario, BC, or Alberta.

At Borrowell, one of our core values and firm beliefs is that diversity makes us better. If you’re unsure about your qualifications for this position, we’d still encourage you to apply. We’re looking for candidates who have experience, but know that not everyone’s had a chance to demonstrate what they can do. What’s most important is that you have a growth mindset and care about helping people with their finances - an area in their lives that causes a lot of stress.

Please note that due to the sensitive nature of the work we do, clearing a credit and criminal record check is a condition of employment.

Borrowell encourages applications from candidates with differing abilities. Please let us know if you require accommodation at any stage in the selection process.

This posting represents a current and active vacancy within our organization.

The budgeted annual salary range for this role is $80,000 – $130,000 CAD. Starting pay is determined by the candidate's relevant experience and skills. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for Borrowell’s full benefits package.
