From conserving water with smart showers to enabling self-driving cars, these tiny but crucial microchips are driving advancements in technologies that revolutionize our lives. While Canada isn’t the only country recognizing their importance, its efforts put it at the forefront of the semiconductor movement. In 2024, Prime Minister Trudeau announced a new federal investment of nearly $60 million to support projects by IBM Canada and the MiQro Innovation Collaborative Center, aiming to boost semiconductor production and generate hundreds of new jobs across Canada, including Toronto.

NVIDIA is one of the fastest-growing tech companies in the world. It designs and supplies GPUs and SoCs, or systems on a chip, for automotive and mobile computing markets. Today the company is perhaps best known for its development of chips crucial to AI computing. The global company has operations in Toronto, including the Toronto AI Lab, founded in 2018.

 

Intel Corporation is an American multinational company that designs, manufactures and sells semiconductor computer circuits, its technology enhancing everything from self-driving cars to shopping experiences. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and has 15 additional offices throughout the United States, Canada and much of Europe. 

 

Tenstorrent Inc. is a next-generation computing company that builds AI-focused computers and develops processors designed for faster training and adaptability to future algorithms. Headquartered in Toronto, with U.S. offices in Austin, Texas, and Silicon Valley, and global offices in Belgrade and Bengaluru, the company is powered by a global talent network.
