We can trace Toronto’s prominence as a business hub back to the colonial period when it became a crucial outpost for the fur trade. Its location on Lake Ontario and access to the Great Lakes made it an ideal trade location, allowing it to grow into the major city it’s become. As of 2023, Toronto proper has nearly 100,000 active businesses. Many of the world’s largest, most well-known companies have offices in this key Canadian city. These are the ones to know.

PayPal is a financial services technology company that offers a mobile payment service. Originally used primarily for peer-to-peer payments as its name implies, since its original founding in 1998 the company has branched into e-commerce and banking integrations. Today it’s used by some small businesses as their sole payment processor.  

 

Wipro Limited is an Indian multinational technology company that provides residential and commercial connectivity services and supports B2B clients on a consultancy basis. Its management and consulting services focus on deep tech and hardware, with expertise in cybersecurity, cloud and big data. Wipro employs over 230,000 workers with a team of several hundred working from its Toronto hub.

 

Magna International provides the auto industry with technology solutions and products that include energy storage systems, chassis systems and solutions for lighting and seating. The company has several manufacturing facilities in Canada and its Headquarters in Aurora, Ontario. 

 

Google offers hardware and software services that aim to help people function in their daily lives. Its suite of products include Gmail, Chrome, Google Translate, Maps and Drive. Google’s has an office in the Old Toronto area and has operated in Canada since 2001.

 

Deloitte is a diversified multinational enterprise that offers consulting services in a wide range of business processes. Its specialty is in strategic accounting and financial advisory services for enterprise clients. Deloitte’s global operations employ more than 450,000 professional and support workers, and by annual revenue it is considered the largest of the Big Four global accounting firms.   

 

Amazon provides the world’s largest e-commerce marketplace alongside consumer tech products like Alexa, Kindle, Ring and Fire TV. It operates two office in Old Toronto, employing 3,500 employees in the city. It’s on the lookout for talented software developers, engineers and AI professionals to join its Toronto team.

 

Apple offers some of the most popular consumer software and hardware in the world. The company has long been known for being at the edge of technological advancement, such as the iPhones, HomePod and Newton. Apple’s corporate Toronto office is just minutes from the Harbourfront in the Southcore Financial Centre.

 

Since 1911, IBM has been one of the world’s most prominent tech companies. With nearly 300,000 employees worldwide, its employees fulfill a variety of roles that include coding, consulting, investing, sales and design. In recent years, the company has invested heavily in quantum computing. 

 

General Motors is an American multinational automotive company with operations on six continents. Famously headquartered in “Motor City” Detroit, USA, the company runs a global team of over 160,000 technology, industrial and administrative workers. In the Toronto area, GM occupies a sprawling seven-acre campus, which includes a 5 million square foot assembly facility and a 2 million square foot propulsion plant.  

 

Microsoft offers a suite of software and hardware products that are also household names, including Windows and Xbox. The company also invested heavily in AI through its partnership with OpenAI, while working across sectors like Infrastructure-as-a-Service and quantum computing. It’s downtown Toronto location is the company’s Canadian headquarters.
