Position Description: Vice-President, Global Tax Advisory
Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Tax, the role is responsible for managing Sun Life’s global tax planning and advisory agenda. The incumbent leads the strategic direction for the team and the talent development of the tax advisory resources. He or she oversees the design and execution of tax strategies, the management of tax controversies and the delivery of tax support to Sun Life businesses. The VP Global Tax Advisory monitors Canadian and International tax developments that are relevant to Sun Life and advises accordingly.The position leads a team including a number of Assistant Vice-Presidents operating within the tax function and certain other tax specialists.
Accountabilities:
Supported by an experienced team of tax specialists, the VP Global Tax Advisory has the following accountabilities:
- Provides strategic direction and overseas the design and implementation of tax planning strategies
- Manages the overall tax efficiency of Sun Life’s operations and corporate structure
- Evaluates the Canadian and foreign tax implications of proposals
- Monitors tax developments and communicates their impact to relevant stakeholders; makes recommendations where required
- Manages existing tax structures from a Canadian and international tax perspective
- Provides tax support to Sun Life’s Corporate Development group on M&A activities
- Provides tax support to Sun Life’s businesses and Investments
- Manages tax controversies and works toward resolving them favorably
- Holds a passion towards developing a strong and diverse team to support the work of the Tax Advisory team
- Ensures the team complies with established procedures including those in the Global Tax Advisory Process
- Manages external tax resources and external tax advice
Decision authority:
Giving consideration to tax risk, the VP Global Tax Advisory makes decisions and recommends courses of action to the SVP Tax and other stakeholders.
They will make decisions relating to people management of direct reports.
Internal Relationships:
The VP Global Tax Advisory interacts with:
- Tax specialists in the broader tax function
- Other global functional specialists within Sun Life, including those in accounting, legal, treasury and capital
- Representatives of business units
They will be a member of Sun Life’s Tax Leadership Team, which includes the SVP Tax, the VP Global Tax Operations and the VP Specialty Tax Compliance and Advisory
External Relationships:
The VP Global Tax Advisory engages with:
- External tax advisors
- Representatives of relevant tax authorities, including the Canada Revenue Agency
- Tax associations
Organizational Impact:
The VP Global Tax Advisory drives tax strategies to deliver bottom line results and to sustain existing tax benefits
Unique Requirements:
- Relevant experience in taxation, whether acquired in a consulting environment or within the tax department of a large financial institution
- A strong set of tax technical skills
- An understanding of the insurance business
- Proven experience in bringing innovative options and solutions to business partners and leading through change
- Proven ability to influence the performance of others to deliver results
- Strong leadership skills and an ability to drive projects toward completion
- Excellent communication skills
- Business acumen
- Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
