The Vice-President, Finance, Global Markets is accountable for providing leadership to the Global Markets Finance team in all aspects of financial planning, analysis, decision support and management/ Board reporting. The role will be supporting the Head of Global Markets and the executive team (comprising of Head Traders and Sales Head) and is responsible for providing sound independent business advice and financial analysis (including resource implications) on business and strategic opportunities/challenges as well as regulatory changes to Global Market Executives.

The services of this business are diverse and complex in scope and require extensive knowledge of the products, business, industry and the markets including regulatory and accounting rules. This includes having a good understanding of the fixed income, currencies, equities, commodities and structured notes markets and products. It also encompasses sound knowledge of existing and upcoming changes to the capital, liquidity and other regulatory and accounting rules and working closely with senior Risk Management and Treasury executives in a fast paced environment.

This role also provides second line of defense oversight on deliverables produced by the accounting and product control teams to ensure accurate, complete and timely accounting records and reports (statutory and regulatory) in accordance with IFRS accounting policies and regulations and the CIBC governance and control framework.

What You’ll be Doing

Financial Leadership and Decision Support

  • Responsible to ensure accurate and timely financial and management reporting and analysis is provided to business leader and executives, including, proactively looking and implementing opportunities to:

    • Improve timeliness of reporting

    • Streamlining underlying processes

    • Provide consistency of reporting across line of businesses

    • Enhance integrity and quality of the reports and underlying information

  • Proactively collaborate with accounting policy and controllership team to operationalize new initiatives and process improvements.

  • Provide value-added analysis and recommendations regarding the financial performance of Global Markets with regard to plans, actual results, forecasts, trends, future direction and external benchmarks, including weekly updates to Executive Committee, when necessary.

  • Assist the CFO Capital Markets with the quarterly/annual business performance review process including reviewing business performance with the business executives.

  • Provide continual insight and support on resource utilization (Capital, Leverage Exposure, Funding, Headcount etc.) including helping business executives manage and optimize resources and make conscious decisions to maximize profitability per unit of constrained resource.

  • Accountable for Global Markets annual and strategic financial planning process, including working with the Global Markets business leaders/executives to develop the strategic and annual plan, including updating latest estimates each quarter and/or when required.

  • Work with Global Markets leaders/executives and enterprise strategy to prepare and present annual strategic plan to the management committee.

    • Ensures appropriateness of key inputs and assumptions used in the development of the plan.

    • Assists with presentation and communication of the plans to Senior Management, Board of Directors and external parties.

    • Ensures timelines for submissions and presentations of plans are adhered to.

  • Monitor and track progress against annual and strategic targets escalating any significant deviation from the strategic plan to the Capital Markets business leader/executives and the SVP & CFO Capital.

  • Provide analyses and recommendations in support of new strategic and tactical initiatives relating to Capital Markets.

  • Leads and/or actively participates in special projects and strategic initiatives of Capital Markets.

  • Performs ad hoc analysis, reports and presentations for Capital Market executives.

  • Directs projects or research studies to help business stay abreast current trends and developments in the industry and understand how level with our competitors.

  • Proactively offers recommendations on strategic and/or business opportunities to the Capital Markets leaders/executives.

Governance and Control

  • Develops statutory and/or management accounting policies and procedures.

  • Ensures document control procedures for all financial operations are in place.

  • Liaises with required legislative bodies to ensure compliance obligations and to resolve or minimize contentious issues.

  • Ensures the integrity, consistency and accuracy of financial standards and policies.

  • Provides professional, specialized expertise to the business by diagnosing problems/issues and proposing business solutions.

  • Provides effective financial stewardship of the business, ensuring management understands and complies with practices and regulations pertaining to CIBC.

What We’re Looking For

  • Business / Accounting degree and/or recognized professional accounting designation (MBA, CPA, CFA ) or equivalent and extensive knowledge of the financial services industry.

  • Advanced knowledge of the practices, procedures and principles in the field of finance including accounting, planning, capital budgeting, investment and reporting principles and practices sufficient to interpret and analyze high-level complex concepts and apply these in unique ways.

  • Advanced knowledge of Basel rules applicable to the Trading businesses.

  • Thorough understanding of the Fixed Income, Currencies, Equities, Derivatives, Commodities, Securitization, Collateral Financing, Proprietary trading and Debt & Equity  origination and Syndication businesses.

  • Demonstrated business judgment and experience, creative and strategic thinking.

  • Developed knowledge of regulatory issues, business-related competitive, legislative and economic environment and complex accounting/reporting systems.

  • Advanced operational knowledge of strategic and business planning processes.

  • Extensive working knowledge related to external financial and/or other industry, market, regulatory environment, client business practices and needs sufficient to interpret, analyze and creatively provide business recommendations.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills with the ability to organize, summarize and present complex accounting issues and business activities to senior executives and the Board.

  • Excellent negotiation skills to be able to articulate your views and recommendations to senior executives and cross-functional colleagues.

  • Exceptional ability to build relationship and trust with business partners/executives and cross-functional colleagues/executives.

  • Outstanding management skills to motivate, coach and lead a high performing team of financial professionals.

  • Ability to think outside the box to be able to provide creative, innovative and unique approaches and solutions necessary to resolve complex business and financial problems.

  • Demonstrated multi-tasking and time management skills with an ability to deliver timely and quality product even under extreme time and work pressure.

  • Demonstrated project and process management capabilities, including experience in implementing a major change in a large organization.

  • Ability to liaise and build strong working relationships with CAO group, Legal & Compliance, Treasury, Risk Management, Human Resources, etc.
