As a Team Lead, Vehicle Systems Engineering you will be the people manager for a sub team within our Vehicle Systems Engineering group. You will also provide subject matter expertise and display technical leadership when required. This team is at the forefront of expanding Geotab’s world-class vehicle support by researching new vehicles, reverse engineering their systems, and developing software tools to automate and scale these processes. As subject matter experts, the team designs and defines methods for the safe and reliable extraction of high-quality data from vehicles, supporting a wide range of initiatives across vehicle data and product development. You will need to work closely with various different Geotab departments as well as communicate with external vendors.
To be successful in this role you will be a self-starter with a technical background working in reverse engineering and engine data. You have the ability to quickly understand complex problems and technical concepts. In addition, the successful candidate will have at least 1 year managing a team of 3 or more people with an ability to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage teams and projects through completion.
- Manage team expectations with regards to task assignments, work arrangements, and other department expectations.
- Support team and direct reports in their participation in the Agile development workflow. Encourage and participate in review, retro, planning and daily stand up activities to facilitate development, and continuous improvement and information sharing for the team.
- Guide, support and coach team members on the following activities:
- Support the global reverse engineering vision and process by contributing to the use, design and implementation of the software tooling.
- Provide expert project leadership and guidance to the team as SME.
- Oversee the activities and performance of direct reports
- Grow the reverse engineering ecosystem and develop training resources and documentation for other teams within Geotab.
- Develop and contribute to product architecture and strategic planning.
- Support Geotab global strategic initiatives.
- 1+ years of people management experience
- 4+ years in vehicle development, vehicle diagnostics development or related industry experience
- Experience with vehicle systems, including electrical and communications architectures.
- Experience with automotive diagnostic standards (e.g. SAE J1939, SAE J1979, KWP/2000, UDS 14229, ISO 27145 WWH-OBD).
- Experience with physical layers (e.g.CAN bus, K-Line/ISO9141, VPW/PWM, Single Wire CAN etc).
- Experience with vehicle interfacing and analysis tools and automotive diagnostic scan tools.
- General experience diagnosing vehicle related problems using conventional tools (probing connectors, harness building, circuit testing).
- Experience with writing and debugging scripts (e.g. Python, Matlab, etc.)
- Strong programming fundamentals, and embedded C/C++ considered an asset.
- Experience with workflows for software development.
- Experience with SQL or Google Big Query equivalent.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem solve to well-judged decisions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in soft/ people leadership skills (communication, conflict resolution, decision making, empowerment, team work, delegation, time management, project management).
- Strong people management skills; able to support under performer, resolve conflicts, coaching to take good to great.
- Strong project management skills; able to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage projects through to completion.
- Excellent influence without authority capabilities, verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with delivering presentations and training.
- Leadership experience in a team-oriented workplace, supporting diversity initiatives, etc.
- Strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
