The Opportunity:

The Operations Manager is responsible for supporting the business and business plan delivery by leading Policy Services and General Operations for Canada. The role works closely with the Director of Canada, Underwriting Director and Claims Manager to ensure all Operational activity meets agreed standards of exceptional, accurate and timely service delivery. This role will have oversight of managers in facilities, business transformation and compliance, and underwriting support.
 

The role will work on identifying further opportunities for continuous improvement and process efficiency, and help set, drive and deliver on the wider Operations change agenda while also ensuring the overall service offering provided by Operations remains optimum and fit for purpose. It will also be key in enhancing our project management mindset across the Canadian business and include accountability for complying with local legal and regulatory requirements.

Your new role:

Strategy

  • Contributes to International Market strategy development and prioritizes operational deliverables and activities of the teams
  • Work and liaise closely with Director of Canada and senior management to understand business strategy, and how operations can support in the short medium and longer term

Service

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to provide excellent customer focus that meets their needs
  • Measure qualitative and quantitative performance of the Operations team and be able to evidence cost to serve and value add to business stakeholders.
  • Set and manage operational budgets, ensuring these are monitored regularly and variances identified in good time.

Process and continuous improvements

  • Assess, evaluate and develop improvements to improve efficiencies and effectiveness
  • Ensure the team conforms to all agreed and active standards and procedures to ensure consistency across all work activities.
  • Provide oversight on projects and business change programmes to ensure continual business improvement and synergies between teams      
  • Establish and maintain, clear, uniform and consistent work processes and ensure these are properly and clearly documented in line with best practice.

Risk and Compliance

  • Support the business with compliance and best practice by ensuring data consistency and integrity across key business systems to minimize risks.
  • Ensure that procedures are adhered to and provide support in liaising with external regulatory bodies
  • Coordinate Operational Risk activities for the country, working closely with the Risk & Resilience team
  • Working with compliance manager, ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements to meet our external and internal obligations
  • Lead internal audit activities where needed and where appropriate develop and manage the implementation of a suitable strategy to minimize risks

Team Management

  • Prioritize team workloads and balance/escalate conflicting demands to ensure agreed deadlines are achieved.
  • Manage appointment, dismissal, performance engagement and reward of the team(s) to effectively manage resources within the function
  • Establish clear accountabilities and authority levels for direct reports and build a strong culture of accountability and performance to ensure delivery of goals

About you:

  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation skills and communication skills (verbal, written & presentation) including dealing with third party / client relationship management
  • Ability to analyse and use data for decision making with good attention to detail
  • Good relationship building and ability to manage expectations of multiple stakeholders
  • The ability to produce detailed reports at various levels
  • Good project management skills to plan, motivate and achieve required deadlines
  • Strong knowledge of statutory/ regulatory regime an asset
  • A knowledge of business processes and process improvement
  • Detailed knowledge of risk and regulatory requirements
  • Intermediate level of MS office applications, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
