Job Description

The Traffic Management Centre (TMC) Supervisor will be located full time at the City of Toronto Traffic Management Centre. Their primary responsibilities will be to lead and oversee the operations of the City of Toronto’s Traffic Management Centre, ensuring efficient traffic flow, effective incident management, and the delivery of high-quality services to the public. The role involves strategic planning, team leadership, stakeholder coordination, and operational excellence to enhance the safety and efficiency of Toronto’s transportation network.

 

Key Responsibilities

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Management Centre, ensuring seamless 24/7 functionality.

Develop and implement operational strategies to optimize traffic flow and minimize congestion.

Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations.

Lead the coordination of responses to major traffic incidents, planned events, and emergencies.

Ensure effective communication with emergency services, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders.

Conduct post-incident reviews and implement lessons learned to improve future responses.

Manage and mentor a team of TMC supervisors, operators, and support staff.

Develop training programs to enhance team capabilities and ensure high performance.

Conduct performance evaluations and address any staffing issues proactively.

Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including city departments, contractors, and the public.

Represent the TMC in meetings, workshops, and public forums.

Foster strong relationships with key partners to support collaborative traffic management efforts.

Ensure the effective operation and maintenance of traffic management systems, including Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), CCTV, and Variable Message Signs (VMS).

Identify opportunities for technology upgrades and lead the implementation of new systems.

Monitor system performance and address technical issues promptly.

Analyze traffic data to identify trends, assess system performance, and inform decision-making.

Prepare detailed reports on TMC activities, incidents, and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Use data insights to recommend improvements to traffic management strategies.

Contribute to the development of long-term plans for traffic management in the City of Toronto.

Identify and implement initiatives to enhance the TMC’s operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Stay informed about industry trends and best practices to ensure the TMC remains at the forefront of traffic management innovation.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor Degree in a relevant discipline + 6 years experience in traffic operations, transportation planning, or a related field or Relevant Diploma + 8 years of relevant experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Ideally 7+ years in traffic operations, transportation planning, or a related field.

Proven experience managing teams in a high-pressure, operational environment.

Demonstrated success in leading incident management and traffic operations.

Bachelor’s degree in transportation engineering, urban planning, or a related discipline.

In-depth understanding of traffic management systems, tools, and technologies.

Familiarity with the City of Toronto’s transportation network and policies (preferred).

Incident management training and first aid certification (desirable).
