Job Title: Temporary Safeguarding Specialist 

Department: Operations 

Reports To: Global Director, Safeguarding & Accountability 

Status: Part-time temporary role up to 16 hours per week (five-month contract)

Location: Fully remote 

Salary Level: $40 – 45 CAD/hour 

PURPOSE:   

To provide specialized safeguarding expertise that strengthens World Renew's safeguarding systems, policies, practices, and organizational capacity across Canada and the United States. This role will support the enhancement of safeguarding prevention, risk management, reporting, response, training, and accountability mechanisms while ensuring alignment with World Renew's global safeguarding commitments, CHS requirements, and applicable Canadian and U.S. legal and regulatory frameworks. This role will contribute technical leadership, policy development, training, and strategic guidance to help foster a culture that prevents and responds effectively to abuse, exploitation, harassment, misconduct, and other safeguarding risks. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:     

A. Safeguarding Systems & Policy Development 

    • Lead the review, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safeguarding policies, procedures, standards, and tools across North American operations. 
    • Assess safeguarding strengths, risks, gaps, and opportunities and recommend practical improvements to strengthen organizational accountability and effectiveness. 
    • Ensure safeguarding systems, child and youth protection practices, and related guidance align with World Renew's safeguarding commitments, CHS requirements, and applicable Canadian and U.S. legal frameworks. 

      B. Risk Assessment & Safeguarding Integration 

      • Develop and maintain SEAH risk assessment tools, mitigation frameworks, and safeguarding resources tailored to North American programming. 
      • Support staff and program teams in identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring safeguarding risks across programs and operations. 
      • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate safeguarding standards, survivor-centered approaches, and risk mitigation measures into program design, proposals, and implementation. 

      C. Refugee Resettlement & Program Support 

        • Support the Canadian Refugee Resettlement Program and related ministries in strengthening safeguarding systems, practices, and accountability mechanisms. 
        • Provide safeguarding guidance for community-based, volunteer-led, and church-sponsored programming within Canadian and U.S. contexts. 
        • Develop and adapt safeguarding tools, resources, and training materials to support refugee sponsorship, settlement, and community engagement activities. 

        D. Training, Capacity Strengthening & Organizational Learning 

          • Design, develop, and deliver safeguarding training, workshops, and awareness initiatives for staff, volunteers, board members, church partners, and other stakeholders. 
          • Create practical safeguarding resources, implementation guides, learning tools, and training materials that strengthen organizational capacity. 
          • Promote organizational learning and continuous improvement through coaching, consultation, and sharing of emerging safeguarding best practices. 

          E. Continuous Improvement Support 

          • Coordinate and provide safeguarding-related support organizational improvement initiatives. 
          • Monitor and support implementation of safeguarding-related recommendations arising from audits, and current PSEAH indicators under the CHS and CAPSEAH, and organizational assessments. 

          F. Reporting & Knowledge Transfer 

            • Prepare reports, presentations, recommendations, and briefing materials for leadership and key stakeholders. 
            • Maintain safeguarding records, resources, tools, and documentation while monitoring progress against organizational priorities and objectives. 
            • Support safeguarding communications, website content, stakeholder engagement, and representation of World Renew in relevant internal and external forums. 
            • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.  

            SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   

            This position has no supervisory responsibility. 

            KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED:  

            • Able to respect and support the mission, vision, and values of World Renew. 
            • Demonstrated commitment to safeguarding, protection, accountability, and the dignity and wellbeing of all people. 
            • Extensive knowledge of safeguarding systems, survivor-centered approaches, complaint mechanisms, and risk mitigation practices. 
            • Demonstrated expertise in Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH). 
            • Strong knowledge of international safeguarding standards, including the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) and related accountability frameworks. 
            • Experience designing safeguarding policies, procedures, risk assessment tools, and implementation frameworks. 
            • Ability to assess safeguarding risks and develop practical, context-appropriate recommendations. 
            • Excellent facilitation, training, coaching, and capacity-building skills. 
            • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills. 
            • Excellent analytical, writing, documentation, and report development skills. 
            • Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. safeguarding, child protection, and relevant legal contexts is highly desirable. 

            EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:   

            • Advanced degree in Social Work, Law, International Development, Human Rights, Protection, Safeguarding, or a related field. 
            • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in safeguarding, protection, child protection, accountability, PSEAH, or related disciplines. 
            • Demonstrated experience developing safeguarding systems, policies, procedures, training programs, and risk assessment tools. 
            • Experience supporting NGOs, humanitarian organizations, or international development agencies. 
            • Demonstrated familiarity with CHS, safeguarding audits, complaint mechanisms, and survivor-centered approaches. 
            • Experience working within Canadian and/or U.S. programmatic contexts is strongly preferred. 

            LANGUAGE SKILLS:   

            • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.  
            • Additional languages are an asset.
