Job Description
The Toronto Star has one vacancy in the Team Editor classification in the Editorial Department. The Team Editor, Newsletter and Social will play a pivotal role in the Toronto Star’s efforts to engage and expand its audience in one of the fastest-growing and most diverse urban regions in the world. This position focuses on driving digital engagement and building meaningful connections with our readership through newsletters, social media, and innovative content tactics. This role involves leveraging data to inform editorial decisions, maximizing the reach and longevity of our journalism, and helping guide the newsroom’s transition to more evergreen and helpful content creation.
Key Responsibilities:
Newsletter Management
- Write, edit, and publish compelling newsletters that engage and retain subscribers.
- Develop new newsletter strategies to cater to emerging audience interests and needs.
- Collaborate with editorial and audience teams to curate high-quality, impactful content for newsletters.
Social Media
- Oversee the Toronto Star’s social media presence, ensuring posts are engaging and optimized for each platform.
- Work with social media specialists to create strategies for audience growth and engagement.
- Track performance metrics and adapt strategies to maximize reach and interaction.
Audience Development and Diversification
- Develop innovative content tactics to attract and engage new audiences in Toronto’s fast-growing and diverse communities.
- Ensure content strategies reflect the evolving demographics of the region.
Collaboration and Strategy Development
- Work closely with the Digital Team Editor, Content Strategy to identify areas of high reader interest.
- Guide reporters and editors in creating more evergreen and helpful content.
- Collaborate with the Torstar Digital Team, and specifically it’s Audience division, to align editorial content with audience needs and business objectives.
Data and Insights
- Analyze audience behavior and performance metrics using complex data tools.
- Simplify data insights to inform actionable strategies for the newsroom.
- Share key findings and recommendations to drive content performance and engagement.
Salary: $72,787.84 - $100,872.66

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be located in Toronto.
Qualifications
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and style for different platforms and audiences.
- At least 5 years of experience in a subscriber-focused newsroom.
- Proven track record in audience engagement, content strategy, or digital publishing.
- Expertise in data analysis tools and the ability to derive actionable insights from complex datasets.
- Passion for enterprise journalism and its role in serving communities.
- Deep understanding of audience behavior and trends in the digital media landscape.
- Familiarity with Toronto’s diverse communities and ability to create content that reflects and serves this diversity.
- Excellent organizational and collaboration skills, with experience working across departments.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with newsletter platforms and social media management tools.
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and content performance metrics.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
