Supervisor, QA Laboratory and Sensory Services

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Quality Assurance Laboratory, you will supervise the chemical and sensory operations, delivering the LCBO Quality Assurance laboratory’s mandate to generate accurate results and conduct analyses in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 standards whilst ensuring that beverage alcohol products follow provincial and federal regulations.

About the Role
Quality Assurance Laboratory
- Plan, coordinate and supervise analytical testing programs and monitor laboratory performance within an ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 quality management system (QMS)
- Supervise the development and validation of new methods of analysis to evolve the QA laboratory testing services
- Support the sourcing of new laboratory instrumentation and oversee its commissioning
- Supervise equipment calibration, preventive maintenance and service programs by troubleshooting equipment problems, coordinating repairs and service solutions
- Act on non-conforming analytical data by evaluating and responding to out-of-control values and implementing required corrective actions following QMS protocols
- Monitor and measure performance of laboratory operations, and take measures to continuously enhance service levels
- Support configuration of laboratory applications, including LIMS, data processing tools and statistical process control applications
- Respond to inquiries on product testing, interpretation of results and governing policies and regulations, from internal and external clients
- Support and coordinate internal and external audits. Perform departmental internal audits.
- Ensure duties are performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and LCBO corporate safety policies
Sensory Evaluation
- Manage the sensory programs to ensure accurate and valid analysis, consistent with LCBO product testing requirements, ISO 9001 standard and client expectations
- Design and implement sensory panels’ qualification programs to facilitate selection and configuration of best-in-class sensory panels
- Design, plan and implement sensory evaluation methodologies to support sensory testing programs, research and development
- Configure and maintain sensory applications that support the sensory operations
- Select, configure, train and develop sensory panels; build statistical and analytical reports to monitor panels’ performance and plan strategies to improve performance where applicable.
- Liaise with clients and internal stakeholders to ensure LCBO policies and procedures are followed when products are submitted for sensory evaluation
- Perform sensory evaluation on various types of beverage alcohol products in accordance with established standard operating procedures. Oversee the production of sensory kits for internal and external clients
About You
- Bachelors’ Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, food science or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years experience in analytical testing of beverage alcohol products, sensory science and statistical analysis
- Practical implementation of QMS including ISO 17025 and ISO 9001
- Practical knowledge of proper quality control protocols and good manufacturing practices relative to the beverage alcohol industry obtained through a variety of courses or work-related experience
- Ability to perform sensory evaluations on all types of beverage alcohol products
- Advance computer skills; Windows based operating systems, LIMS, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, MS Visio, Compusense/other sensory analysis software, statistical analysis software tools and analytical instrument integration software
- Experience in supervisory responsibilities required under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Practical experience in union and management relations with knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Knowledge of federal and provincial regulations governing compositional standards, manufacturing practices and packaging/labeling requirements for beverage alcohol products; Food and Drugs Act and Regulations, Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act and Regulations, Canadian Association of Liquor Jurisdictions (CALJ) Product Identification Standards
