The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, and enforcement activities. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

What We Do

The Strategic Planning, Reporting and Execution (SPRE) Department is responsible for leading strategic planning and enterprise-wide business planning; guiding project prioritization and execution as well as overseeing the project portfolio and monitoring corporate performance; and reporting on progress to the Board, Ministry of Finance and the public. 

The Summer Student will report to the Manager of the Strategic Planning and Reporting Team. The team is responsible for developing the strategic priorities and the annual Business Plan for the OSC. The team is also responsible for developing accountability reporting to the Board, the OSC executive and to the public.

At the end of the summer term, working with the Strategic Planning and Reporting team, the Summer Student will:

  • Gain an understanding of how the OSC undertakes its accountability reporting to ensure the OSC is meeting it’s set priorities and delivers on its mandate and other accountability requirements
  • Participate in the development of accountability reports to the OSC executives, the OSC Board and to the public
  • Support the development of public reporting on performance measures to enhance transparency and accountability to stakeholders
  • Support the planning and development of the strategic direction of the organization for the upcoming fiscal year
  • Gain experience working with a regulatory body and an agency of the Provincial Government
  • Gain experience working with a highly collaborative and dynamic team

Specifically, the Strategic Planning and Reporting Summer Student provides a variety of support and services to the OSC including:

  • Updating information collection templates using Word and Excel to prepare corporate reports for OSC Executives and the Board
  • Assisting the team in collecting and analyzing data and information related to service standards and quarterly Board reports
  • Working with the team to incorporate data analysis into various reports using data visualization techniques
  • Communicating and collaborating with individuals from various staff levels across the organization to obtain the information required for accountability reports
  • Looking for opportunities to improve processes and reports with a view to enhancing transparency and streamlining process burden
  • Participating in the development of materials and processes to support planning and preparing for the upcoming Statement of Priorities and Business Planning cycle

What do you need to be successful in this role?

  • Currently enrolled in a Masters of Public Administration, Masters of Business Administration, an undergraduate program in Political Science, or similar program in a related field, and demonstrated understanding of related concepts, theory and best practices in that respective field.
  • Interest in public administration and desire to learn how public organizations identify priorities, develop plans and strategies to fulfil the mandate and meet accountability requirements.
  • Strong work ethic and an ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work on a team with a collaborative attitude that enables you to engage with all levels of employees.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to manage time and address competing priorities.
  • Possess a high level of attention to detail and the understanding and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Comfort working with data and data visualization.
