Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
Printers are the lifeblood of restaurants. On any given day, printers are used twenty times more often than POS terminals, and when they stop working, the restaurant stops working. As a Staff Engineer on the Kitchen Connectivity team, you'll be responsible for making sure that doesn't happen. You'll also design and architect new features to help restaurants do more, work better, and make more money. .
In an increasingly dynamic landscape, Square for Restaurants is building a modern product ecosystem to help restaurants thrive. As an iOS engineer, you'll work closely with designers, product managers, and other engineers to develop beautiful software that gives restaurants in your neighborhood an advantage. You'll also be joining Square's vibrant global community of iOS engineers, with a robust open source presence and culture of learning and teaching.
You Will

  • Architect and improve the Square's printer architecture to support diverse merchant workflows
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers
  • Participate in the full lifecycle of product development, from early definition, engineering design and architecture, feature release, and continued iteration
  • Champion best practices in iOS development, ensuring code quality, performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Identify and drive improvements in our iOS development processes and tools, contributing to the technical roadmap

You Have

  • 12+ years of industry experience
  • Proficiency in native iOS development using standard tools and frameworks
  • Proficiency in Swift and/or Objective-C for development (we use both)
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and leading by influence
  • A passion for building mobile products at all levels - from the low level architectural decisions to the individual pixels and overall product experience
  • An innate desire to build mission-critical products that our merchants will depend on every day to successfully run their business

Technologies We Use and Teach

  • Swift and Objective-C
  • Square's open source iOS frameworks: Workflow (state management), Blueprint (declarative UI)
  • Unit tests, snapshot tests, integration tests
  • Vendor SDKs, Service APIs, and Protocol Buffers
  • Bazel for our build environments
