Position Summary:
At Miovision, we build our own custom electronics to deliver best-in-class transportation data and traffic management solutions. Our hardware team is responsible for developing the electronics, firmware, and radio components for Miovision Core and Scout traffic monitoring products, as well as the Opticom priority/preemption phase selectors, 2.4GHz radios, C-V2X, and infrared products.
We’re looking for an experienced RF Hardware Designer to join our team and participate in all stages of product development. You’ll be responsible for designing and validating RF subsystems for new products and sustaining in-field products. You’ll work on 4G/5G cellular, C-V2X (5.9GHz PC5), GNSS, Wi-Fi, and our proprietary Opticom 2.4GHz communication system. Some projects will require RF expertise at a system level (eg: communications link budget, antenna selection) while others will be at the PCB or module level (eg: selecting an all-in-one ISM band transceiver, RF circuit design with PAs, LNAs, etc).
You’ll work closely with other disciplines within the hardware team (electrical, firmware, mechanical, quality, supply chain) and will report to the Senior Manager of Hardware Development - Electrical. This is an intermediate to senior level position based in Kitchener, Ontario and requires in-person work as needed to meet project deadlines, although remote work is encouraged when access to hardware isn’t necessary. Assigned work will vary according to the candidate's abilities and active projects.
Key Accountabilities:
- Be the subject matter expert on all RF engineering topics
- Design and validate radio communication and GNSS systems including proprietary Opticom 2.4GHz, C-V2X RSUs, 4G/5G cellular, and Wi-Fi
- End to end ownership of RF engineering from initial product concept, through NPI, and in-market sustaining
- Breakdown product requirements into technical requirements
- Architect RF systems using a mix of off the shelf and custom designed components to optimize for cost and implementation schedule
- RF hardware design including:
- architecture (link budgets, antenna locations, etc),
- system-level component selection (antennas, cables, pre-certified modules, etc),
- PCBA level component selection (transceiver chipsets, filters, LNAs, PAs, switches, mixers, oscillators, etc) and RF circuit design
- Schematic capture of RF system designs
- PCB layout of RF systems
- Participate in EMI/EMC reviews of PCBAs
- Debug PCBA and system level problems to meet product and regulatory requirements
- Bench testing and debugging in-house or through an outsource laboratory partner; conduct field testing when appropriate
- Specification and procurement of RF test equipment to grow in-house capabilities over time
- Maximize customer-level performance metrics including communication range, location accuracy, etc
- Collaborate with the rest of the Electrical team for component selection and PCBA implementation
- Collaborate with the Quality Team to certify the product against IC/FCC, PTCRB, cellular carrier, and other regulatory standards
- Collaborate with the Supply Chain team to ensure component availability and favorable pricing
- Collaborate on the design of manufacturing test fixtures for radio interfaces
- Manage external partners such as chipset vendors, test labs, antenna manufacturers, etc
