Job Description:

The Proposal Team is the door to Sun Life Group Benefits incoming business and is viewed as a key contributor to the sales cycle. As an innovative leader in the industry, our role is to deliver compelling proposals which position Sun Life as the Obvious Choice.


The Senior Bilingual Marketing Proposal Writer will be responsible for the preparation and delivery of complex Group Benefits proposals for our Corporate and National Business Development teams. This bilingual role reports to the Proposal Manager.


As a key contributor to Sun Life Group Benefits sales cycle, your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Develop and prepare proposals that respond to requests for proposals (RFPs) and meet established service standards.

  • Ensure proper tracking and workflow management for each project to ensure they are completed successfully and on time.

  • Write, edit, format and proofread proposals, ensure proposals are compliant with instructions and requirements.

  • Manage production and distribution of all required documents.

  • Work with internal partners (Account Executives, Business Development Directors, Underwriters, Subject Matter Experts) to determine strategy and respond to questionnaire.

  • Develop good working relationship with proposal team members in both Toronto and Montreal.

  • Provide support and guidance to less-experienced team members, as required.

  • Superior effective writing skills to clearly articulate our Group Benefits value proposition and engage the reader.

  • Superior oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate clearly and concisely in attractive ‘plain language’ to ensure understanding and appeal.

  • Strong capacity for considering the intended audiences and anticipating expected responses to communicate messages and adapt our standard responses.

  • Ability to communicate with partners with the most efficient medium (phone, video conference, email, Workchat, etc.).

  • Business savvy to ensure appropriate and accurate responses to RFP questions and requirements.

  • Build strong relationships with business partners (ie, AEs) build the trust by following through on what you say you’ll do.

  • Strong problem-solving skills. Well-developed problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills.

  • Knowledge of proposal tools, such as Loopio, Salesforce, SharePoint, Outlook.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and using MS Word templates, style sheets and formatting. Ability to troubleshoot and fix formatting or style sheet errors.

  • Leadership skills

    • Ability to mentor and provide guidance to less-experienced proposal specialists.

    • Ability to lead major projects that require influencing leaders and other Business Units/partners.

    • Serve as back-up to Proposal Manager when required.


Education, certification & other requirements

  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada and worldwide.

  • Bachelor’s degree or related work experience required.

  • GBA or CEBS (Certified Employee Benefit Specialist) designations, an asset.

  • Previous marketing or writing experience an asset.

  • Proficient level of knowledge of Group Benefits products and distribution mechanisms, clients and market segments, organization structure and sales process specific to Group Benefits.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
