The Role
The Datastore Reliability team is a centralized platform team responsible for providing a consistent, reliable and efficient set of relational and NoSQL database offerings available to all developers at Block. The team is made up of subject matter experts responsible for identifying the challenges running and managing databases at scale. As the manager of the team you will be working with application developers, technical leads and the other platform teams to make Block data stores remarkable for product engineers.
The team is responsible for:

  • Solution design for standard patterns of relational and NoSQL databases
  • Working with application teams to use appropriate technologies and following best practices
  • Understanding and building solutions based on the application developers needs.
  • Developing tools, running proof of concepts
  • Deep dives into bugs and performance issues
  • Feedback to and point of contact with cloud providers
  • Making Block data stores amazing


You Will

  • Guide the strategic direction, technical roadmap, and execution of existing and future relational database offerings.
  • Collaborate with technical leads and stakeholders to define and drive the vision for secure, reliable, scalable and efficient relational datastore offerings.
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships with product, security, platform and product engineering teams.
  • Manage, mentor, and grow a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Cultivate an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, taking risks, and learning from mistakes.
  • Set goals, track progress, and ensure timely and high-quality delivery of projects by your teams.


You Have

  • Deep technical knowledge of relational database technologies, particularly MySQL, as well experience with key value NoSQL datastores.
  • A track record of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects that improve security, scalability, and performance.
  • Experience breaking down complex projects into clear milestones and leading teams to deliver high quality solutions quickly.
  • Prior experience working cross-functionally with security, product, and platform engineering teams to design and implement secure solutions.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and align diverse teams around a common vision.
