At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive.

Growth teams are at the heart of our products and decision-making to drive business growth. We’re looking for passionate, driven engineers to build systems that empower our users (both Drivers and Riders) to make the most effective use of Lyft’s products and experiences by making them more predictive, personalized, and adaptive. We’re looking for someone who can build & own innovative applications, passionate about solving problems with distributed computing in building reliable systems, and is excited about working in a fast-paced, innovative, and collegial environment.

The Growth Platforms team owns both the Incentives & Messaging systems for Lyft. These systems determine & send the right messaging and/or incentives to the right user at the right time. We work with lyft-wide engineering teams including rider & driver side, marketing, and product management to adapt our services and the platform offerings to be able to enable growth across Lyft. You will gain comprehensive knowledge of Lyft's internal services and operations and adapt them to meet the growth needs. You will have the opportunity to build and improve the quality and efficiency of the various growth platforms & tools that are critical for Lyft.

As an engineer at Lyft, you'll collaborate with teams like product, data science, analytics, and operations on code that empower us to iterate quickly, while focusing on delighting our passengers and drivers.

As a Software Engineer on Growth Platforms, you will be responsible for sound technical execution of projects through hands-on development, quality-assurance, and prototyping along with making tradeoffs between technical investments and product work, and collaborating with other engineers on system design. You will help shape the product direction by developing a deep understanding of the customer and working closely with cross-functional partners from Product, Design, Science, and Operations. You will work with a group of talented engineers and help the team to deliver significant business impact. If you enjoy collaborating with technical and nontechnical partners in a fast-moving space with real-world impact, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement backend features end-to-end with clear ownership, delivering well-scoped work from technical design through to production with moderate guidance from senior engineers
  • Write clean, reliable, well-tested code that meets team standards and holds up in code review
  • Participate actively in code reviews, giving specific and constructive feedback while continuing to develop your own review instincts
  • Debug and resolve issues across backend services including performance bottlenecks, reliability problems, and data integrity issues
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and partner engineering teams to clarify requirements and surface technical constraints early
  • Contribute to technical discussions and help evaluate implementation approaches for new features
  • Write unit and integration tests for your own code and develop familiarity with the team's broader testing and observability practices
  • Address technical debt and make incremental improvements to existing services as part of regular development work
  • Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production incidents, and support teammates in mitigating customer-impacting events
  • Communicate progress, blockers, and tradeoffs clearly within the team
Experience:
  • 3–5 years of software engineering experience with a history of designing & shipping backend features in production environments
  • BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages (Go, Python, Java, or similar); experience with Python is a plus, with a solid understanding of performance and reliability fundamentals
  • Solid working knowledge of distributed systems concepts — microservices, REST and/or gRPC APIs, message queues, and async processing patterns
  • Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases, including data modeling, querying, and basic indexing and performance considerations
  • Experience with observability tooling — logging, metrics, and alerting — and a developing instinct for how to make systems debuggable in production
  • Comfortable working with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar) at a feature level, with a growing understanding of how services are deployed and operated
  • Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests with a focus on reliability and regression prevention
  • Familiarity with Git workflows, code review processes, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to scope and break down moderately complex tasks independently
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving
  • Nice to have: experience with machine learning and building LLM applications
  • Nice to have: proficiency in AI tools.
Benefits:
  • Extended health and dental coverage options, along with life insurance and disability benefits
  • Mental health benefits
  • Family building benefits
  • Child care and pet benefits
  • Access to a Lyft funded Health Care Savings Account
  • RRSP plan with company match to help save for your future
  • In addition to provincial observed holidays, salaried team members are covered under Lyft's flexible paid time off policy. The policy allows team members to take off as much time as they need (with manager approval). Hourly team members get 15 days paid time off, with an additional day for each year of service
  • Lyft is proud to support new parents with 18 weeks of paid time off, designed as a top-up plan to complement provincial programs. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible.
  • Subsidized commuter benefits and Lyft ride credits
