The Shop Technician Trainee will support the efficient management of our centralized shop, assisting Branch Managers, technicians, and other staff. This role involves learning and performing various tasks related to fire and safety equipment, with a focus on gaining the skills necessary to carry out the shop technician role safely and effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn to service, refurbish, and test fire extinguishers, including dry chemical, CO2, wet chemical, and wheeled unit extinguishers.
  • Assist in servicing, testing, and repairing kitchen fire suppression system cylinders.
  • Help service and test fire hoses.
  • Participate in recycling scrap/condemned fire extinguishers and scrap metal.
  • Assist in recycling dead batteries from emergency lights, fire alarm panels, and security systems.
  • Ensure exchange unit fire extinguishers are in stock (5lb, 10lb & 20lb).
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop, and help maintain shop equipment.
  • Assist in ordering stock for the shop (extinguisher parts, wet chemical agent, CO2, etc.).
  • Complete work orders and record appropriate billing, manually or electronically.
  • Work towards certification in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Stay up to date on current codes, including NFPA 10, CSA, and CGA Standards.
  • Wear PPE when performing daily duties.

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Aptitude for learning health and safety regulations and procedures in preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand for 8-10 hours.

Ability to drive a company truck for local deliveries up to several hours.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and use a crane for lifting heavier equipment.
