About the Role & TeamAs a member of the Engineering Excellence team within the Buyer & Community Engineering organization, you will take on a senior, hands-on role. You will collaborate with the Engineering Excellence lead and senior engineering, product, and platform participants to convert engineering strategy into repeatable program actions. The role typically covers large cross-domain programs involving tens to hundreds of engineers. Interaction with senior and executive team members is frequent.
What you will accomplishEngineering Excellence
Influence, promote, and embody an engineering culture that is passionate about driving continuous, meaningful improvements. These improvements focus on efficiency, execution, and processes. They deliver positive impact that is measurable, repeatable, and sustained.
Dev ergonomics & velocity
Lead initiatives that reduce developer friction (tooling adoption, dev workflow improvements, build time optimization) and that measurably improve engineering velocity. Run pilots, measure impact, and scale successful approaches.
Essential engineering & migrations
Drive essential engineering programs such as critical migrations (API, DB, Apps), mandatory periodic system upgrades, and platform modernization efforts. Coordinate with platform and application teams to remove blockers and complete migrations that unlock long-term velocity gains and reliability.
Technical debt, cleanup & architecture hygiene
Own targeted tech-debt remediation (dead-code cleanup, deprecations) and run architecture workshops and ADRs where deadlines, scope or build ambiguity are slowing teams. Translate architecture outcomes into executable remediation plans.
Program rescue, handling blocking issues & unblocking
Act as the lead unblocking operator for high-risk programs: triage issues, marshal cross-functional resources, run remediation sprints and codify repeatable rescue patterns so problems don’t recur. Maintain and operate blocking lists and critical issue playbooks.
Cross-domain coordination & reviews
Run Engineering Excellence reviews and regular initiative readouts (boulders) that align L1/L2 owners on quality and velocity priorities. Ensure initiative owners track measurable benchmarks and that progress is visible and acted upon.
Measurement & Impact
Define success metrics (velocity, quality, SLO attainment, build/test savings) and own dashboards that show improvement over time. Use data to prioritize engineering-excellence investments and to demonstrate value.
What you will bringExperience: ~8+ years running technical programs with a strong bias for engineering execution and delivery. Prior work leading reliability, migrations, dev-ergonomics, or similar engineering-excellence programs is strongly preferred.
Technical proficiency: Comfortable reading system builds, understanding technical tradeoffs and dependencies, and owning technically complex remediation or migration work. You will frequently coordinate with architects and senior engineers.
Operational rigor: Demonstrated track record owning incident/alerting improvements, CI/CD/test pipeline improvements, or tech-debt programs with measurable impact.
Cross-functional influence: Able to mobilize engineers, platform teams, SRE, and product partners to deliver cross-domain technical outcomes. Strong judgment in handling blocking issues and collaborating with interested parties.
Data & tooling: Strong with dashboards and analysis (Sheets/Excel, Looker/Tableau, SQL preferred). Familiar with tooling around build systems, CI/CD, test instrumentation, and release tracking (JIRA/Confluence).
Behavioral: Pragmatic, hands-on operator who turns strategy into concrete remediation plans; excellent at execution, follow-through and “say/do” integrity.
Education: BS/MS in CS, Engineering, or equivalent experience preferred.
