This is not a typical product design role. You'll design workflows where a human decision can pull a 40-ton truck off the road or send it back into traffic. The tension between operational tools, speed, and safety-critical decision-making is what makes this seat unique.
You'll join as the second product designer at Waabi, working closely with the first (your hiring manager) to establish design culture, systems, and processes as the team grows. You'll ship designs in code from your first week. And will grow to own the full human-to-robot experience, designing everything from fleet management software to the interior and exterior interfaces of our AVs.
You will…
- Design fleet management and remote assistance workflows: Define and design the end-to-end workflows that operations staff use to monitor, dispatch, and intervene with AVs in real time. This includes dashboards, pre-mission checks, remote assistance, and the operational procedures that connect them.
- Observe users in their actual environment: Take a first-principles approach to design by stepping out of the office. You will observe users, terminal staff, and fleet operators in their actual environments to gain deep insights into their workflows and streamline processes.
- Design for AI and Automation: Define how humans interact with highly capable AI systems, creating intuitive workflows for fleet tracking, vehicle dispatch, remote assistance, and on-the-ground operational exception handling.
- Build and extend our design system: Contribute to and expand Waabi's shared system to maintain consistency and scalability across all product surfaces.
- Ship directly in code: You'll contribute to production React codebases using AI-assisted tools (Copilot, Cursor), not hand off static specs. The shipped product is the deliverable.
Collaborate across product, engineering, and operations: Work with PMs, engineers, researchers, and operations teams to define requirements and translate them into effective design solutions.
Qualifications:
- Experience building complex tools: 5+ years experience designing for information dense, complex ecosystems (e.g., healthtech, dev tools, or logistics). We value your ability to untangle complexity over your specific industry background.
- Own complexity and execute end-to-end: You can break down messy problems and drive from discovery through delivery with clear user-centric thinking.
- First-principles thinker: You don't just rely on standard patterns. You strip problems down to their fundamental truths to build intuitive tools for entirely new paradigms.
- Hands-on and curious: You are comfortable in ambiguous environments and excited to build in domains you may not be familiar with. You are eager to understand the realities of logistics, hardware integrations, and autonomous tech.
- Strong design craft and judgment: You raise the bar, push for excellence, and balance visual polish with usability, making smart, user-centered tradeoffs.
- A builder's mindset: You design in code, are comfortable with component libraries, and see AI-assisted coding as a natural way of iterating. You know the shipped product is a key measure of success.
Bonus:
- AV / Robotics / Logistics Background: Prior experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or logistics operations (e.g., time at Waymo, Cruise, Aurora, Nuro, or a freight/logistics company).
- Real-time Interfaces: Experience designing for real-time monitoring, dispatch, or command-and-control interfaces.
- Physical Operations: Background that touches industrial design, hardware interfaces, or physical operations environments (terminals, warehouses, test tracks).
- Scaling Products Externally: Experience designing products that transitioned from prototype/internal usage to customer/external-facing, demonstrating the ability to scale designs for broader user adoption.
